Tarnawa Breeders Cup Winner Visits Frankel

Tarnawa , special winner of Aga Khan in the 2020 Longines Breeders Cup Tournament (G1T) at Keeneland, will be sent to the champion Frankel for her first mating in 2022.

The news was announced by Pat Downes, manager of Aga Khan’s Irish Studs, on December 28 on the Nick Luck podcast.

The first pony wins the bet Cape Cross (IRE) mare Tarana , Tarnawa counted Qatar Prix Vermeille (G1) and Prix de l’Opera Longines (G1) among consecutive championships in 2020. After attending both races in France, she traveled to the United States to become the champion. back the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Turf with a stellar rally, surpassing her third highest score Miracle after losing his leg early.

“She’s right there with the best I’ve ever trained because she has some great qualities in terms of determination, talent and class,” he told Racing Post when she retired in September. 11.

Tarnawa continues to practice through 2021 and has three strong performances from four starts — winning Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes (G3), finishing second in a controversial Irish Champion Stakes (G1) when St Mark’s Basilica crossed her path, and missed the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) by 3/4 of the length ahead of the German allied athlete Torquator Tasso . However, the Breeders ‘Cup title defense did not happen as she finished 11/14 at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar.

Downes said a trip to Aga Khan’s private home Siyouni could be in the future cards for Tarnawa in the future, but adding a half-sister’s advancement to the stallion will influence that decision.

“For example, when you really look at her pedigree, she’s not a Cape Cross mare, so Sea The Stars isn’t an option for her,” he said. “I imagine we will send her to France to go to Siyouni at some point but we have a sister of hers who is now turning 2, so we will see her continue as before making that particular decision. The options actually available to someone like Tarnawa were pretty slim at the start of her academic career.”

In addition to Siyouni who is about to turn 2, Tarana also has a 3-year-old winning baby Fastnet Rock gelding Tazaral and released one of Frankel’s ponies this year. She was sent to Lope de Vega for the year 2022.
