Super Mario sounds exactly like Chris Pratt — and that’s fine

When Chris Pratt teased his upcoming role as the game’s most iconic character, Mario, he called it “Unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.” Charles Martinet, who has voiced both Mario and Luigi since 1992, clearly wouldn’t be the inspiration.

Fans have been bewildered for months about how Pratt – rose from goofy Park and Rec roles become superheroes with movies like Guardians of the Galaxy—Can handle plumbers with an Italian accent. After Nintendo announced the first trailer for the movie today, the answer is… Chris Pratt.

“Where is this?” Pratt Mario — who could be referring to anything from a dinosaur park to the most bewildered bathroom at a concert with his voice — wonders aloud as he examines a field full of mushrooms. Right after that, we hear him declare “Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!” in what could be his really Mario voice — your local Brooklyninte parody is screaming that he he is walking.

Mario’s voiceover is undeniably a good reason to tune in today’s trailer. Nintendo has been wowing fans ever since it was announced that Pratt, alongside Jack Black as Boswer, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, would voice a character that many who have known since childhood. “I worked really closely with the directors and tried a few things and achieved something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear,” Pratt said. Diversity. Again… it’s just Chris Pratt, an ordinary guy, in a movie where everyone else has at least a slight variation in their voices.

This week, fans mourned the loss of Mario’s assbut hear me out: The sheer absurdity, the absolute trolling of this revelation, is happiest best results. Pratt’s Mario shouting “Mamma Mia” in an Italian accent heard in the early ’90s might not be as engaging after an hour and a half in surround sound.

Good news and bad news here: Black’s first lines as Bowser sound fitting and threatening to King Koopa. But if Pratt has any indication that Mario Bros. what it might sound like, brace yourself for the Charlie Day-voiced Luigi scream to still come, as we saw at the end of the trailer.
