Stone Ridge, NY: Old Houses and Welcoming Neighbors

Known for its Dutch colonial homes built from local limestone, the six-square-mile village of Ulster County, in the town of Marbletown, is attracting new residents who appreciate its historic charm, central location and Main Street where they can find essentials like bagels, sushi, hardware, a gym, several electric vehicle charging stations, and even a grocery store and Pharmacies.

“For a town the size of Stone Ridge, we have a lot of amenities,” said Ms. Tasheff.

Laurel Sweeney, an associate broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nutshell Realty, has lived in Stone Ridge for 38 years and owns a local liquor store, Stone Ridge Wines & Spirits, with her husband, Tim Sweeney. (Mr. Sweeney is also the owner of Nutshell Realty.)

Ms Sweeney, 63, said: “Stone Ridge is the equivalent of everything the Hudson Valley has to offer. “It doesn’t have the hustle and bustle like some of the other very popular towns, such as New Paltz and Woodstock. It has a more comfortable quality of life. I say to people, ‘If you want to wear black and pay a high price for everything, go to Rhinebeck. If you want to wear blue jeans and a cap on your head and hang out on the farm, head to Stone Ridge. ‘”

However, the village has a population of 1,234 according to the 2020 census, which has more architectural highlights than the old stone houses. “We have these super modern homes that young professionals from the metro area are looking for,” says Ms Sweeney. “More of our buyers are now looking for open plan, efficient, move-in ready homes, not your stone homes.”
