Emma Thompson and Aisling Bea urge UK banks to stop funding fossil fuels

By Beth Timmins

Business reporter, BBC News

Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry and Aisling Bea are among the celebrities calling on the UK’s five biggest banks on the High Street to stop funding new oil, gas and coal projects.

It follows criticism that HSBC, Barclays, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds are funding “fossil fuel expansion” despite making green commitments.

Businesses and charities like Greenpeace also support the campaign.

HSBC and Barclays say they are helping their customers cut emissions.

The Make My Money Matter campaign points to research by the environmental charity Rainforest Action Network, which claims that between 2016 and 2021, HSBC, Barclays, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds transferred nearly $368 billion (£298 billion). for the fossil fuel industry.

It added that during the same period, lenders financed the 50 largest companies investing in oil and gas projects amounting to $141 billion.

It added that although HSBC and Lloyds have made “welcome new announcements” about stopping direct funding of new fossil fuel expansions since then, “there is still a long way to go” “.

“HSBC this month was found to have provided $340 million to a company opening a new coal mine in Germany,” it said.

Open Letter from “Making Money Matters”; The letter and the website were created using fossil fuel products (computers) and the website still operates on electricity provided by fossil fuels.

Dear HSBC, Barclays, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds CEOs:

We write to you as customers and concerned citizens. In 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA) declared that investments in new oil, gas and coal should not be made if we were to limit the rise in global temperatures and avoid climate catastrophe.

However, the UK’s 5 major high street banks transferred $141 billion to 50 companies at the forefront of oil and gas expansion between 2016 and 2021.

This action is endangering our future.

We want you to make sure your banks stop funding fossil fuel expansion. Here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Stop funding fossil fuel expansion directly.
  2. Inform customers that they must cease operations or face financial consequences.
  3. End the relationship if the customer does not stop expanding fossil fuels.

Lloyds began by ending direct funding for new oil, gas and coal projects; but all 5 of you must make sure to take climate action by following the three steps above, or we’ll find a new bank.

Do you think we will back you to fund climate disaster? Don’t bank on it.

Signed,

In my opinion, Emma Thompson is one of the most serious celebrities of climate hypocrisy on the planet. In 2019, Emma Thompson flew 5400 miles to participate in a protest against Extinction Rebellion.

Police told to use ‘full force’ of law against Heathrow climate change protesters

Heathrow is “working with the authorities” to address any protests that could “disrupt the airport”.

Police have been given the green light by the Home Secretary to use “the full force of the law” against climate change protesters. Plans to destroy Heathrow Airport.

Extinction Rebellion has staged multi-day protests in key areas of London demanding government action on an “unprecedented global emergency”.

Actress Emma Thompson joined protests in London after receiving 5,400-mile flight from Los Angeles in the US.

“I really want to be arrested on my 60th birthday but I have no control over that,” she said.

I am very proud and excited to be a part of Extinction Rebellion.”

In response to allegations of celebrity hypocrisy, Extinction Rebellion explains the problem is that people like Emma Thompson are forced to use fossil fuels because they are trapped in the system.

Dear journalists who have called us hypocrites,

You’re right.

We are living high carbon lives and the industries in which we are involved have huge carbon emissions. Like you – and everyone else – We are trapped in this fossil fuel economy, and without systemic change, our lifestyles will continue to cause climate and ecological harm.

There is, however, a more pressing story that our profile and background can draw attention to.

Life on earth is dying. We are living in the middle of the 6th centuryorder mass extinction. For those who still doubt the seriousness of our situation, here is the International Monetary Fund on October 10, 2019:

“Global warming causes massive damage to the global economy and the natural world, and poses risks of catastrophic and irreversible consequences.”

And here as Sir David Attenborough on December 3, 2018:

“Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale. Our greatest threat in thousands of years. Climate change. If we don’t act, the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world are ahead.”

Climate change is happening faster and more intensely than anticipated; millions of people are suffering, leaving their homes and coming to our borders as refugees.

Besides those who are paying the price for our fossil fuel economy, there are millions of children – called to action by Greta Thunberg – who are begging us, those in power and influence. enjoy, stand up and fight for your ruined future.

We cannot ignore their call. Even if by answering them we put ourselves in your lane.

The stories you write calling us climate hypocrites will not silence us.

The media exists to tell the public the truth. Right now, there has never been a more pressing need for you than to educate yourself on CEE (Climate and Ecological Emergencies) and use your voice to reach a new audience with the truth.

We invite all people with backgrounds and profiles to join us and overcome fear, boldly using your voice to amplify the true story.
Thousands of ordinary people are risking their freedom by engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience. We were inspired by their courage to speak up and join them. We beg you to do so.

With love,

What protesters like Extinction Rebellion and famous hypocrites are actually saying is that it’s acceptable to be a climate hypocrite, as long as you agitate for change. They’re all waiting for you to get the kind of lazy engineering off your ass and find a way for celebrities to live their energetic lifestyles without mining or fossil fuels or whatever. otherwise offend the sensitivities of the environment.

What can I say? When engineers are lazy to do their jobs, when the world is run by magic, green heroes like Emma Thompson won’t need planes to fly.
