startup ‘Make Sunsets’ is “releasing particles into the atmosphere” to cool the planet – Watts Up With That?

From MIT Technology Review and EPA’s”We only regulate farmers and industry” comes the hot mess of climate ego along with PT Barnum-style bad science.

A startup says it has begun releasing particles into the atmosphere, in an effort to regulate the climate

Make sunset tried to earn revenue for geoengineering, a move likely to spark widespread criticism.

A startup claims it has launched weather balloons that can release sulfur particles reflected in the stratosphere, potentially overcoming a controversial hurdle in solar geoengineering. God.

Geoengineering refers to deliberate attempts to manipulate climate by reflecting more sunlight into space, mimicking a natural process that occurs after large volcanic eruptions. In theory, spraying sulfur and similar particles in sufficient quantities could alleviate global warming.

It is not technically difficult to release such compounds into the stratosphere. But scientists have most (though not quite) has limited the implementation of small-scale outdoor experiments. And it’s unclear whether any material has been introduced into that particular layer of the atmosphere in the context of geoengineering research.

That’s partly because it’s so controversial. Little is known about the real-world effects of such deliberate interventions on a large scale, but they can have dangerous side effects. The effects could also be worse in some regions than others, which could trigger geopolitical conflicts.

This is the basic concept in an image:

Millions of tons of sulfur dioxide gas from a major volcanic eruption can reach the stratosphere. Once converted into sulfuric acid droplets, these aerosols reflect the energy coming from the sun, thereby blocking the sun’s rays from heating the Earth’s surface. Credit: Kristina Ruhlman/NASA

The About Page of Make Sunsets has this wild claim:

We create reflective, high-altitude, biodegradable clouds to cool the planet. Imitating natural processes, our “shiny clouds” will prevent catastrophic global warming.

Specifically: we release a natural compound through reusable balloons to create reflective clouds in the stratosphere. Surname *Actually* efficiency: 1 gram of our clouds offsets the warming that 1 ton of CO₂ emissions produces in a year. After three years, our clouds decay and settle to Earth.

Since we deliver our clouds through reusable balloons, we can offset CO₂ at <1% of the cost of other solutions. In particular, we can also scale to compensate *all of* of global warming.

We can offset warming from all annual global CO₂ emissions with our ~$30 million cloud and every $1 billion our cloud cools the world extra~ 0.1°F!

Sound like science fiction? Not so: we have rolled out our first clouds and we will offset a significant amount of warming by 2023!

Money price:

…we will offset a significant amount of warming by 2023!

At the end of 2023, we’ll see if their meager activity makes any difference. My bet is nothing. Or if there is some natural change and the Earth is 0.1 degrees Celsius cooler than 2022, we will get a “See! Told Ya!

If the planet were warmer, we’d have plenty of fun to mock, rightly so.

But wait a minute!

You can become a planetary hero and buy “cooling credits” thisonly $50 for a certificate!

We’ll release at least 1 gram of our clouds into the stratosphere for you, offsetting the warming impact of 1 ton of carbon in a year. We will document our releases on our blog.

For reference, let’s take a look at some actual data on how sulfur dioxide emissions into the atmosphere actually have an effect. In 1991, Mount Pinatubo explode and according to NASA:

Mount Pinatubo’s violent eruption pumped about 15 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. The resulting sulfuric acid aerosols persist in the stratosphere for about two years and cool the Earth’s surface between 1 and 2 degrees Fahrenheit.

15 million tons of sulfur dioxide “cooled the Earth’s surface by between 1 and 2 degrees.” However, the founder believes he can achieve the same with weather balloons carrying a few grams of sulfur dioxide or maybe he is using pure sulfur, who knows?

Yes, science PT Barnum. “There is a fool born every minute.”

It’s hard to say if this outfit is substantive, although it does appear to have secured venture capital funding. According to the “Creating Sunset” blog post below, it seems there is only one guy in Oakland, CA, Luke Iseman, who is upset about “climate change” is toiling in his backyard launching weather balloons purchased from Edmund Scientific while trying to get money from science challengers in the hopes of achieving success. achieve the desired climate effect. No address or phone number. On 10/12/22 Iseman made a Facebook post Iis looking for a volunteer to drive a 14-year-old van towing an Airstream to La Ventana, Mexico, where he may be living.

Its there’s a chance it’s another solar path Deja Vu again!

From the blog “Creating a sunset”:

It’s here

NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Really? You tease me. Things aren’t *this* so desperate that we need to mess with the stratosphere?!

This is a fair and healthy response; much more reasonable than LFG!! Crazy Balloons FTW!! And, on a fundamental level, that’s true: climate change probably won’t result in everyone dying (perhaps a necessary warning here, since ecosystem collapse is so obvious). would increase the likelihood of a nuclear war). And, we are making progress! Of a kind. Maybe one day we will even get rid of fossil fuels. But, we won’t do this and preserve a livable world unless we reflect the sunlight right now.

Here are 5 specific things that have personally made me feel that I have a moral obligation to safely generate the fastest possible global cooling, in the order in which they occur:

….first. We can only mine ~10% of proven reserves to (probably) stay under 1.5C. These reserves are already on the company’s books and are being increased. We will exploit almost 100% of proven reserves, as the common man-milquetoast Trudeau states:I have said many times that there is not a single country in the world that can find billions of barrels of oil and leave it underground while there is still a market for it.

….2. You know, sometimes you’ll read things like “some permafrost is melting and there’s methane in it. How bad is this?” Obviously you read better than UN climate changers. These scary charts suppose, I think 0 greenhouse gas emissions from melting permafrost. This is what really pushed me to the top.

….3. We emit *a lot* of carbon. It is wishful thinking to imagine the decarbonization of agriculture, construction or transportation by 2050, let alone civilization as a whole.
….4. Carbon capture and storage is great…in the lab. We are <0.006% on the way to the UN target by 2050and you need to make very rosy assumptions to *even vaguely* imagine a scenario where this works.

….5. There is a big difference between 1.5C and 2C. As large as most coral reefs and a great global famine.

Inconclusive? mentally prepare.

So yeah: we’re pretty on the right track. But! There is some hope. More info on that follow up post 😉
