Starlet, Future Highlight Los Alamitos Winter Encounter


Six-day winter thoroughbred meeting at Los Alamitos will start on December 9.

The race will be conducted from Friday to Sunday in both weeks (November 9 and December 16-18). Posting time will be 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

The Winter Encounter will be marked by a pair of classified events for 2-year-olds—Starlet for 1st graders, guaranteed $300,000 on December 10, and Los Alamitos Futurity for 2nd graders, guaranteed $200,000 by December 17.

Starlet is one of several races on “Road to the Kentucky Oaks,” with the winner receiving 10 points to a stop in Kentucky Oaks on May 5, 2023, at Churchill Downs.

The top candidate for Starlet is Faiza , the winner of an impressive debut last month for owner Michael Lund Petersen and Hall of Fame coach Bob Baffert. Daughter of girvin will be added to Starlet for $10,000.

The Futurity is one of the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” events. Winners earn 10 points for a spot in the Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2023.

Among the nominees for Future are the Baffert .-trained trio Arabian lion , Fort Bragg and graduated from Los Alamitos gandolfini .

Baffert has won seven of Futurity’s eight renewals since the race was moved to Los Alamitos from Hollywood Park.

Both Futurity and Starlet will run at 1 1/16 miles.

Tournament races will include all cards at Los Alamitos. Allowed bets include win, place, show, exact, triples and daily doubles. Each entry must bet at least $50 on a minimum of five races that day, but there is no bet limit.

The player with the highest bankroll at the end of the day will be declared the winner and the second highest bankroll will be the runner-up.

The winner will receive 50% of the total prize. Remaining bonus: 20% (second); 15% (ranked third); 7.5%; (fourth place) and 7.5% (maximum bet amount).
