Standings, scores of the 2023 Travelers Championship: Denny McCarthy narrowly lost 59 in Round 1

The final advanced event in the PGA Tour’s regular season kicked off with a score of 60 from Denny McCarthy. While 62 was good enough for a co-lead last week after the first round of the US Open, it won’t even get you a co-lead this week at the Travelers Championship.

McCarthy. who played great golf, there are several companies near the top of the table, including several other stars. Now, however, he’s in a great position to take the win that eluded him at the Memorial a few weeks ago and landed a hefty sum. The first prize is worth 3.6 million USD at TPC Tay Nguyen River.

However, the standings behind him were still packed. Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott were just two strokes behind, and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler took a step back. With eight of the top 10 players in the world making the cross-country journey from Los Angeles Country Club a week ago, the competition will be stiffer for the next 54 holes.

Let’s take a look at McCarthy’s round, as well as what’s to come over the next three days at this tournament.

Leader

1. Denny McCarthy (-10)

McCarthy actually played the first game 12 of 8 points under 8 and looked a bit like he could rip off Jim Furyk’s course (and PGA Tour) record of 58. He took a late break – if you can call it that – and only one birdie from holes 13-17.

Then, standing on the 9th fairway (his 18th hole of the day), he hit his 59th shot of the round, and it nearly fell. Take a look at this and tell me it won’t be the shot of the year for the golf magic number.

“I’ve been hitting a nice little hit with the mid-iron all day, so I’m just clutching a 7 iron and I’m trying to cut into it, and just leak a little bit, see it play. out and can’t not see the rest,” McCarthy explained. “At the time, we just went with the crowd’s reaction. Obviously it came pretty close to making it to the ring. In the air, I didn’t expect it to get anywhere close, but obviously it’s exciting when it has a chance.”

So does everyone else.

McCarthy has had a great month. He lost to Memorial in a playoff and finished T20 last week at the LACC. A win here would be a perfect capper, and now he’s in the best position of whoever has 54 holes left to claim it.

other candidates

T2. Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott (-8)

4. Scottie Scheffler (-7)

T5. Shane Lowry, Chez Revie, Eric Cole (-6)

Scheffler cleaned up in the afternoon and was third on the field from tee to green. Humorously, the first thing he said in his post-round interview on Golf Channel was: “I didn’t drive it as well as I would have liked.” He then added that he did everything else well, which was true when he shot 63.

Just look at what’s going on with him this season, he currently has 12 rounds with a score of 65 or higher in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season and has only 6 rounds over 73 points or more. He’s the new favorite to win this tournament, and given that he’s seemingly falling out of bed to shoot 67 right now, he should be.

Looks like Bradley will be your leader. He rocked the morning wave and took the lead before Scott and McCarthy knocked him out. He started in the back and won five birdies in a row before “settling” at 6 under 29 on that side of the field.

How thin is the margin, though? Bradley said he started thinking about 58 after hitting a long hit on the 8th hole of the day (17th hole on the course). However, he might have thought of the number 68 if it hadn’t fallen because of its rolling speed.

“When I hit that long shot on the 17th…it could have been in the water,” he said. “I don’t know, it crossed my mind. I haven’t given it much thought, but I’ll definitely try to do it.

“I couldn’t believe how hard I hit that putt. As soon as I hit it, I couldn’t believe it. So many times in those putts, you beg him to hit the flag,” he continued. “It’ll either slip or hit out, and it just perfectly hits the middle and then falls down. At least it could be a two-shot. Instead of going out of that green area in the bottom 6th place. I’m 4, maybe 3. It’s a big swing.”

Remember if he wins on Sunday.

Canada Open 2023 odds and picks updated

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Scottie Scheffler: +230
  • Denny McCarthy: 5-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 9-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 12-1
  • Jon Rahm: 18-1
  • Shane Lowry: 22-1

Scheffler will probably win, but Cantlay plays better here. He’s only five years old, and he’s been pouring out everything he’s seen lately. Plus, he loves this golf course. Cantlay has five top 15 finishes in his last five starts at TPC River Highlands, and his numbers are solid for someone who is completely integrated and just needs McCarthy to step back a bit. to pull him in. Scheffler will be a problem, but at +230 you can let him be a problem and take Cantlay 9-1 before he shoots 65 on Friday.
