Square Enix Says Mobile Games Division Underperforms

Square Enix released Summary of financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2022. Included in it is a Q&A segment. In this section, Square Enix revealed that their mobile games division is underperforming. To combat this, the company plans to step up its development efforts internally. This segment reveals that Square Enix primarily outsources the development of its mobile titles. Additionally, while the company released several new titles during its third quarter, it stated that the majority of these games did not live up to initial expectations. No specific games are mentioned.

However, Square Enix will continue to release mobile games, despite the mobile division’s underperformance and falling short of certain expectations. It also plans to release new titles in the fourth quarter. That said, net sales increased in the mobile division due to changes in accounting policies. The press conference also revealed that, while the current titles did not perform as expected, sales in these games increased in January 2022.

Outside of its mobile division, Square Enix said it plans to have multiple launches in the fourth quarter. Meetings are listed Triangle Strategy and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. In addition, although the sale of Final Fantasy XIV Due to server congestion, Square Enix believes the title will generate a “certain amount” of revenue in the fourth quarter.

In February 2021, Square Enix stated in an earlier report that the MMORPG contributed a fair amount compared to the strong results it obtained in the third quarter.
