Spencer Rattler announces move from Oklahoma after Lincoln Riley leaves

Spencer Rattler wants out of Oklahoma’s football program.

Less than 24 hours after former Lincoln coach Riley left Norman to head coach at USC, Rattler decided to step into the transfer portal. Rattler shared the announcement in a tweet Monday afternoon confirming that he will be pursuing other options to further his academic and athletic career.

“Thank you for allowing me to become a student-athlete at this prestigious academy,” Rattler said in a statement. “Thank you to all of my teammates and coaches over the past three seasons. We won a number of games together and created memories that I will cherish forever. Special thanks to my family and friends. My friends have supported you. Thank God for the football game. It’s the ultimate team sport and brings people and communities together, unlike anything else.”

During his three seasons at Oklahoma, Rattler threw 4,595 yards with 40 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. When he made his campaign for the Heisman Trophy in the 2021 season, he scored 1,483 passes with 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Rattler hasn’t started a full game for the Sooners since their 37-31 win over Kansas State on October 2.

This news is not a big surprise and is expected regardless of Riley’s decision as the five-star player was substituted for Red River’s game against Texas. Rattler was fired three times and threw a blocker before fellow five-star Caleb Williams took over and gave the Sooners a 55-48 win in Austin. Williams went on to earn starter work for Rattler and started the next six games for Oklahoma.

Rattler’s decision came as Riley departed for Los Angeles on Monday morning. On Sunday night, USC officially announced that Riley would take over as head coach for the Pac-12 program. As Oklahoma undergoes its first coach search since 1999, rumors are circulating about the program’s future as it prepares to enter the SEC conference in 2025.

“Thank you again Oklahoma, I’ll miss you,” Rattler finished.
