Rodolfo Castro must have forgotten to take his phone out of his pocket after receiving a call from Triple-A on Tuesday.
The Pirate’ The midfielder’s phone fell out of his pocket as he slid into the third sole in the previous 6-4 loss Diamondbacks. The play occurs in the fourth inning, in which Castro runs from first to third on one Oneil Cruz. Castro darted forward, safely, into third place, with his phone falling out of his back pocket.
Castro said he didn’t intentionally leave his cell phone on during Tuesday’s game.
Castro told reporters after the game through an interpreter: “I don’t think any professional footballer could go out there with any intention of holding a cell phone. “It was horrible it happened to me. Obviously, it was very accidental.”
When he left his phone on him, Castro broke it MLBrules about allowing electronic devices on the field or in the dugout, according to FOX Sports ‘Ken Rosenthal. Only MLB-approved iPads can be used in the vault, and as of Wednesday afternoon, it’s unclear if Castro faces any disciplinary action. Rosenthal more.
As he is likely to face discipline from the tournament, Castro said he hopes his name will appear in the headlines for a different reason.
“My first day back, if I was the center of attention, I would want it to help the team win, but never in this form,” Castro said. “This is definitely something that was an accident, a mistake, something I would learn from. But definitely something I didn’t mean to happen.”
Pirates coach Derek Shelton defended his players.
“You’re around the game and you see things you’ve never seen before,” Shelton said. This is just a kid making a mistake. It was just one of the things we went up to and told him, ‘You can’t do that.’ “
Castro drew 0 for 3 in his first main game since June.
