SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband service appears to be testing a global roaming service for $200 per month.

Via PCMagsome of Starlink’s customers received an email invites for an upcoming “global roaming service” that provides cross-country access. The email said the service allows the $599 Starlink terminal to “connect from virtually anywhere in the world land.”

The service works via laser links between satellites to provide global connectivity, but there is a caveat that the service is subject to regulatory approvals that have not been granted in all territories. lands globally.

“Since this is a new technology, you can expect Starlink’s typical low-latency, high-speed service interspersed with periods of poor connection or none at all,” SpaceX warned users, although they note that service will “improve dramatically over time”.

The offer also notes that global roaming services are “subject to regulatory approval”. Some countries have not yet approved Starlink. Global “land” service was provided when SpaceX launched Starlink marine service for the oceans and seas.

Maritime service costs $5,000 per month with a $10,000 starter kit, also subject to regulatory approval. Currently, the service can order from USA, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Germany, Italy, Chile, Poland, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. While it’s expensive, SpaceX debate marine services are actually much cheaper and better than VSAT alternatives.

The SpaceX email explains that global roaming is only available in US dollars, and that customers located outside of the US are “responsible for acting as importers of the Starlink Kit Records, which may include paying taxes.” customs and import duties, if required. Global Roaming services are subject to regulatory approval.”

The service is also separate from Starlink for RVs, which is available for land use in North America, Australia and most of Europe and costs around $135 a month.

Starlink aviation costs up to $25,000/month, with a hardware fee of $150,000.
