Sonic goes “open area” in Sonic Frontiers next year

Here he comes, that speed blue boy. Where will he go? Who knows! He can now run around in an open world, no longer constrained by specific paths that cause him to die inexplicably when stepping foot out of them. Of course, I’m talking about the newly announced thing Sonic Frontiers. The next 3D Sonic game is coming in late 2022, and we got our first look at it at tonight’s Game Awards.

I have to say, it looks absolutely lovely. If those ruins weren’t clearly ring-shaped, I could almost picture them in something like Breath Of The Wild or Shadow Of The Colossus.

“An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-speed freestyle in the open area” website says. “Fight powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands – a landscape filled with jungles, overflowing waterfalls, hot deserts and more.”

That’s about all we know so far. It’s not entirely clear what threat to this beautiful landscape will be, or who else on Sonic’s team will join the fight. I’m just very curious how a more open Sonic game would work. Will Tails roam freely in the sky? Do we need to use Knuckles to smash rocks to let us go through areas? Lots of possibilities!

Sonic Frontiers is slated to release late next year on PC and consoles. Check out the site if you get the chance, it has some super nice screenshots.

We’re staying up late covering the upcoming PC game from tonight’s lavish marketing: our hit Game Award tag everything.
