Sonic Plus Origins Coming to Switch this week June 23, 2023. Along with adding a bunch of additions to the base sound origin games, including Amy as a playable character and twelve Game Gear titles, it also marks the first time the collection has been physically released in full.

As a result, copies have left store shelves and reached eager fans, and it seems some are unhappy with the way Sega has handled certain aspects of the game. Some of the complaints seem pretty reasonable to us, although others can be a bit picky. We will let you be the judge.

Let’s start with Amy first. Naturally, it was discovered that Amy could transform into Super Amy after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, just like Sonic and Co. However, some have pointed out that Amy’s ‘Superman’ form simply produces a slight change in color and not a completely redesigned sprite.

A fair assessment, yes? Well, not quite… As pointed out in the tweet below, Sonic is the only character to receive a sprite redesign when transforming into his ‘Superman’ form. All other characters, including Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray, similarly receive only a basic change in color to indicate a power-up.

However, that’s not all because it seems that players are also not satisfied with the way the character select screen works and we can type See where they come from with this one. As you can see in the tweet below, all the available characters are arranged in a row, consisting of three combinations that add the Tail to the mix.

“That looks good”, you might think. Yeah, that’s not a big deal, but previous Sonic games, including ones like Sonic & Knuckles And Sonic Mania, there are separate save locations that allow you to cycle through the available characters. It’s definitely a more elegant solution than what we got in Sonic Origins Plus, and if nothing else, it just highlights the fact that we can’t play Sonic and Amy together. It’s strange?

In the end, fans weren’t the most satisfied with the sound of the Game Gear titles in the new collection. While it’s certainly passable in itself, there’s a glaring difference between the sound from the original Game Gear releases and this new collection. Observe:

Sounds pretty echoey, doesn’t it? It’s true that it’s not uncomfortably bad by any means, but those who’ve played the original releases will certainly notice the difference.

Hey, the point is, Sonic fans have high standards. However, we do not believe that Sonic Origins Plus will turn out to be the disaster that some are predicting. However, we’ll know for sure when the game launches later this week.
