Traditionally, portraits are shot with focal lengths between 50mm and 135mm, although there’s no reason you can’t use a longer focal length. However, the 400mm f/2.8 is traditionally intended for professional wildlife and sports photographers who need as much reach and light as possible. With their super sharp results and narrow depth of field, they seem like a great (if somewhat impractical) choice for portraiture, and this cool video shows you what to expect.

However, if you have, you can see what you can produce quite neatly as well, as the very long focal length and extremely narrow depth of field can make your subject really stand out from the background.
