Shakur Stevenson is pretty confident that Chris Colbert will get the job done. The highly ranked featherweight super contender from Brooklyn, New York, entered his match against late substitute Hector Luis Garcia with an overly bossy attitude on Feb.
However, even though the betting world was firmly in its corner, Colbert still couldn’t withstand Garcia’s epic onslaught. With Colbert hitting the deck for the first time in his career in the seventh round, the normally aggressive New Yorker fought cautiously throughout their portion of the competition. As a result, Garcia would win a unanimous decision of disagreement.
After his crushing defeat, Colbert explains exactly why he can’t bite down on his mouthpiece and fights Garcia when the situation gets tough.
“I didn’t feel like myself tonight,” Colbert said in a post-match interview. “I’m not going in there and not doing anything stupid and not getting caught without a stupid shot.”
To Stevenson’s mind, Colbert’s explanation simply wasn’t good enough. Over the past few months, both Stevenson and Colbert have hurled threats at each other with profanity. Although Colbert claims that the current WBO featherweight super champion athlete is incredibly talented, he still questions Stevenson’s “dog” mentality.
Now, however, when Colbert has offered little resistance in the championship rounds against Garcia, Stevenson has publicly defrauded him for his efforts.
Stevenson said on Cigar Talk: “I think overall, he showed a lot of interesting things. “He ap*ssy. If I beat ten rounds, you have no choice but to fight. All you have to do is act at this point. I feel it’s the ab*tch mentality. At the end of the day, you lost. I feel like that man wasn’t going 100 percent, he got down to ten laps and started running. While Stevenson fully expected Colbert to win, he wasn’t entirely surprised by Colbert’s actions. With both Stevenson and Colbert growing up amateurs together, the former Olympic silver medalist revealed that it’s not the first time he’s seen Colbert under pressure.
“When you’re in the gym and you fight and argue, you know if you’re a dog or not. I know for a fact that he is hiding (lying). I’ve known him all my life. Dude did this at the age of 15 and would enter the ring and then be defeated. That’s who he is.”
