Serbia urges freedom of speech to be maintained while fighting hate speech

She advises that REMs must be “independent, effective and accountable”.

She also called on the Government to ensure the safety of journalists by taking measures to speed up investigation and legal proceedings regarding threats and attacks.

Need political will

Ms. Khan called on authorities to investigate and prosecute longstanding cases of murdered journalists in Serbia. “The killing of journalists is the most serious form of censorship. Iliability must not prevail,” she speaks.

Finally, she stressed that passing legislation alone is not enough to protect freedom of expression.

“What is needed is strong, unequivocal political leadership from a commitment to international standards. The Government’s legal commitments must be translated into action.”

Visiting Kosovo

Ms. Khan also traveled to neighboring Kosovo during her visit. While welcoming the “diverse media landscape” there, she encouraged the government to continue to strengthen media freedom.

“I call on the authorities to fully implement the language law and call on the international community to ensure full support for independent Serbian language media,” she said.

They should also complete investigations into past murders and forced disappearances of journalists, and ensure justice.
