Dog warns of a silent rattlesnake on the trail
Bear may be small in stature, but he is very brave! Devin Diede and his wife Alex were walking with them when suddenly Bear, their 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, warned them they were in great danger. Sit still, wait to attack, be a rattlesnake!
Devin or Alex may have stepped on the snake themselves, but Bear’s warning made them less cold-hearted. During the brief but terrifying encounter, the pair are unsure whether the snake will attack Bear.

The bear was bitten and rushed to the nearest veterinarian
At first, Devin and Alex weren’t sure if Bear was bitten during their encounter with the snake. They immediately did not find any puncture wounds on him. However, after some time passed, they noticed that Bear wasn’t putting any weight on either of his front legs. They rushed to the nearest vet for emergency treatment.
Bears can’t walk when they go to the vet clinic
About an hour and a half passed between the encounter with the snake and the family’s visit to the vet clinic. When they got there, Bear was completely unable to walk. Of course, the couple fear for Bear’s health and still hope that he can recover.
“Thankfully, the vets and technicians at the Rapid City animal emergency clinic are amazing,” Diede told KEVN. “The vet caught him and immediately started a blood transfusion.” Bear stayed in the emergency clinic overnight.

The tough boy made a full recovery
Bear was able to go home to his family after spending the night for observation and continued care. Devin commented for KEVN That bear was “a tough little guy and definitely a hero. He did not cry or bark” during the attack. When Bear got home, he acted like nothing happened. “He’s doing surprisingly well,” Diede said. “He walks very well and is as happy as he can be.”
Hip hip hooray for Bear! We are glad that his heroic efforts led to a happy ending for him and his companions!
