Senior Chihuahua disappeared three years ago, now she’s at home for Christmas
Delilah, Chihuahua has been missing from her Vancouver home for three years after going missing in her backyard. But the magic of Christmas brought something special to the little 13-year-old girl. She was reunited with her family just in time for the holidays!
And the Kleiner family couldn’t be happier to have their big dog back in their arms. And while Delilah must recover from her ordeal, she’s happy to be there and looking forward to lots of Christmas presents underneath the tree.
Good memories lead to reunion
Three years ago in March, the dog’s mother Mary Kleiner took to Facebook to search for Delilah after she disappeared. The concerned dog’s parents have also contacted the BC SPCA, alerting animal rescue in the event her sweet “little cow” shows up there. But months, then years passed, with no sign of Delilah.
“We told the kids,” To share Mary, a broker in Vancouver. “We said, you know, we lost her. Maybe she’ll go home, but if she doesn’t, maybe she needs someone more than us during this time.”
But a reunion between the puppy and his family began when a Trail Appliances employee looked out of the window and discovered a box with something inside just a few days ago.
Emma Michel, BC SPCA Richmond assistant branch manager, explain, “She thought it looked like a rabbit, and it looked like it was struggling.”

Seeing that it was a sick Chihuahua, the employee contacted the Richmond branch of BC SPCA. And when Delilah came to their care, she was in dire straits. It’s good that the kind soul found her when she did.
“The poor boy is in terrible condition,” speak Emma. “She is emaciated, dehydrated, appears to be deaf and partially blind, has no teeth, she suspects frostbite in her ears and is anemic.”
Posting information about Chi’s illness on Facebook, the BC SPCA asked followers to contact them with any information. And upon seeing pictures of Delilah, one of those watching the rescue recalled seeing her face before.
Emma explains: “Someone saw our post and remembered that a woman named Mary Kleiner and her family were searching for their lost Chihuahua almost three years ago. “When we received an email from Mary saying that the dog we were in our care could be hers, we were shocked.”
Go home
After verifying this puppy was Mary’s missing Delilah, a reunion was quickly arranged. Staff and volunteers were “delighted” to be a part of the reunion, reporting: “Our whole team was there for the reunion and there were a lot of tears.”
Mary said of Delilah coming home, “What a miracle.”
“It feels like she’s been here the whole time. Is crazy.”
Delilah will need time to recover from the lost time, and while the Kleiners are spending “every hour” helping her heal, they are all happy to spend Christmas together. this.
