Senate Budget Committee Hearing | Climate, etc.
by Judith Curry
On March 22, I will be testifying before the Senate Budget Committee on “The Business of Risk: How Climate Change is Changing the Insurance Market.”
Listening’s website is [here]you will be able to watch on C-SPAN.
Here is a list of witnesses:
• Eric Anderson, Chairman of Aon
• Nancy Watkins, Actuary Director & Consultant at Milliman
• Dr. Benjamin Keys, Professor of Real Estate, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
• Judith Curry, President of the Climate Prediction Applications Network, Professor Emerita at Georgia Tech
• Jerry Theodorou, Director of Finance, Insurance and Commerce at R Street Institute
All these individuals look interesting and represent many different points of view
Note that I was the only witness to “climate science” on my assignment. This hearing is clearly not about climate science, but based on a variety of assumptions about climate change and its impacts.
I heard rumors that this was a difficult Commission to testify before. So interesting.
So I heard about this Hearing from a congressional staffer last Monday afternoon and received my formal invitation on Wednesday, with written testimony at 10 a.m. Tuesday. next week. So this gives the witness a week to prepare, if you start working immediately after the call from the employee (gambling that the individual will actually be invited to testify).
My written testimony is almost complete (needs work on conclusion and format). I was able to use some material from my book (condensed and simplified), which helped me put this together. This is an interesting (and newly relevant) topic for me, because it emphasizes risk.
I will post my written testimony in a new blog post on Wednesday morning before the Hearing begins. This is going to be an interesting Hearing, stay tuned.
Note: I can testify via Zoom so I don’t have to travel. To the horror of Covid-19, a useful method has emerged: it is not necessary to let people travel to meetings or Hearings to present in person.
