Sena Agbeko asserted while fighting favorite Isaiah Steen on Friday in Atlantic City that he is a world-class boxer and just needs the stage to prove it.
Ghanaians are not all talk.
Agbeko, known for his punching prowess rather than his technical prowess, defeated Steen by a unanimous decision in a closely contested 10-round match on “ShoBox: The New Generation.”
The official scores are 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94, all in favor of Agbeko (27-2, 21 KOs).
“To be able to show up and get this job done, I’m happy to be vindicated for all the hard work I’ve put into the sport,” said 30-year-old Agbeko, who lives in Nashville.
“My biggest worry with faction B is that I will be robbed. He was better than I expected, and my goal is to just relax and let go.”
Agbeko started and ended strong, winning the first three rounds and the last two with all three cards. Steen (16-1, 12 KOs) was the most successful in Rounds 4 to 8.
The judges clearly supported Agbeko’s aggression and strength.
Steen, who boxed well, was surprised that he ended up going the wrong way in the decision.
Steen said: “The scoring was messed up, that’s the reality. “He won’t touch me. I throw more shots, connect and land more. I didn’t see what the judges saw, but I definitely won that fight.
“They scored his goal. His big punches are blocks and don’t land. When they say 98-92, I think that’s my point. He doesn’t touch me. “
Agbeko, who was unranked for Friday’s match, is now thinking big. He said after his win that he wanted to take on another boxer from Nashville.
“I want Caleb Plant! Caleb,” he said. “Let’s do it in Nashville. Let’s sell out Bridgestone Arena. “
