Back when the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was first released, it came with a 3-button keyboard that – back in 1988 – was like the future. It’s not as square and boxy as the NES and Master System controllers, but has a rounded, ergonomic shape that’s more comfortable to hold and includes an extra button. Happy!
By the time the SNES arrived, however, it was clear that Sega’s pads were no longer dominant; With only 3 action buttons, it cannot provide the same degree of control options and when Street Fighter II hit the market and changed everything forever, Sega had to release a separate pad that had the required number of buttons for the game. That pad is also smaller and boasts an improved D-Pad, and it’s a design Sega has stuck with for decades (although Genesis Mini bundled with 3-button controllers in North America and Europe – Japan there is a 6 button variant instead).
However, accessory maker Retro-Bit – partnered with Sega to produce an officially licensed controller – felt that the old 3-button pad was worth modifying. It releases the ‘Big6’ – a brand new pad that takes the original 1988 design and adds three additional action buttons.

We took a long and hard look at the original 3-button control panel that was released with the original console. It’s roomy, comfortable, and sleek with a unique DPad, Start button, and classic ABC buttons. Its design offers comfortable ergonomics for long play sessions, which SEGA is aiming for by bringing the arcade experience to families with Genesis & Mega Drive.
Our team updated the design by adding additional XYZ buttons while incorporating the Mode shoulder button without changing the overall look of the original. It keeps the feel and look of the original, adding new features to give players a new way to experience their favorite games. Since revealing it, the answer has proven to us that we are definitely on the right track.
Like other Retro-Bit controllers, the Big6 will come in a variety of housings. There is a wired version available for use with original Genesis/Mega Drive hardware (ideal for replacing an old or damaged controller), as well as a USB wired option, which works on any supported device USB input. Then there’s the 2.4GHz wireless option. USB and 2.4GHz versions are listed as Switch compatible when playing in docking mode.
Wired options are expected to be available by the end of October this year, while the wireless variants will arrive in November.
