Kevin Nishita was doing security Wednesday afternoon for a team covering a story in downtown Oakland when someone tried to rob the crew and Nishita was shot, according to Oakland Police.
San Francisco news station KRON4 reported that Nishita did security work for one of its crews.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our security guard and friend, Kevin Nishita. Our deepest sympathies go out to Kevin’s wife, his children, his family and all of you. his friends and colleagues.
“This senseless loss of life is caused by another violent criminal act in the Bay Area. We hope that the offering of the reward will help arrest those responsible so they can face the justice for this terrible tragedy,” KRON4 Vice President and General Manager Jim Rose said in an emailed statement to CNN.
Oakland police also released a surveillance photo Saturday of a vehicle they believe is involved in the attempted robbery and murder of Nishita, a 2004-2008 Acura TL, white, 4-door, with doors sunroof and no front number plate.
Oakland police said Wednesday that the guard was taken to the hospital after the shooting happened around midday.
It said the attack came after “an extremely violent week” and staff would be increased to respond to violent crime in the city.
“Individuals in the caravan were heavily armed and exchanged firearms with armed security forces used by several cannabis businesses. Individuals in the caravan also fired shots. multiple shots were fired at OPD officers responding to an ongoing burglary early Monday morning.”
