Hello everyone! I’m Jovan, Technical Artist at Ebb Software. The entire team here have found joy in bringing you nightmare-like experiences that will immerse you completely in the carpets of gloom. And today, we’re excited to reveal that our first game, Scorn, is coming to Playstation 5 later this year.
Many of you here may be new to Scorn, so for those unfamiliar with the game, you’re about to experience a terrifying adventure like no other. Trapped and trapped in a strange biomechanical world, you must overcome a decaying civilization, now inhabited by disfigured and grotesque creatures. While you’ll be able to wield a variety of weapons in the game, Scorn isn’t a shooter, and each encounter can quickly turn deadly. Ammo and lives are scarce, and your intelligence often advises you to avoid direct confrontation. Instead, to make your way through this enchanting maze, you’ll have to resurrect and activate abandoned machines, part machine, part flesh, all horror.
We like to compare it to the experience of a nightmare. Often, nightmares are described as strongly subjective experiences that can be extremely distressing and frightening, eliciting emotional responses in dreamers, and triggering feelings of fear and anxiety. and horrifying. Scorn tries to bring these emotions to the player in a very subtle way through its sombre atmosphere and sombre corridors.
The immersive power of PS5
As we were developing the game for PlayStation 5, we finally had the opportunity to harness the potential of the DualSense wireless controller to immerse you even more in this twisted world, expanding the total experience. Scorn’s case. It allows us to enhance the player experience and let the world breathe in a new way. Since there’s no verbal dialogue in the game, we’ve put an emphasis on environmental storytelling, so haptics are a great addition to this exceptional audiovisual experience.
The main character in the game interacts with the world mainly by using his hands. Most of these interactions are also painful for the character. That’s where haptics come into play. The visuals themselves are painful to the player’s eyes, but we wanted to increase this feeling by giving the feel of the hand holding the controller. The player can also sense the direction of the haptics (left or right hand), further enhancing the experience.
From the slightest interaction, such as feeling the small rumble of a head-mounted organic monitor to situations where players encounter fierce and dangerous encounters, the DualSense controller haptics elevate High level of immersion by balancing vibration intensity according to -game sound.
We’ve also taken full advantage of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers when players need to use tools and weapons to survive. Each weapon or tool has a subtle yet different sense of weight. For example, the piston-like melee tool, used to operate various equipment and sometimes in desperate attempts at self-defense, has a specific resistance in the trigger that when used together with haptics, will enhance the desired effect.
Finally, the DualSense controller’s light bar represents the player’s health, changing color in the right situations. It is a small addition to the very minimalist HUD in Scorn. The idea is that players can get partial instant information about their HP status while playing the game.
Balancing the features of the DualSense controller is not an easy task but with the collaboration between the TechArt, Programming and Audio teams, we have done it successfully and created something special for PlayStation 5 players.
