You can now get WD Black P10 an external hard drive in a massive 5TB configuration for a very reasonable £97 – it won’t be able to hold any thin mint cakes, but the 5TB makes room for a lot of game installs.
Of course, cost-effectiveness is the main reason to choose a regular hard drive over Best SSD, because solid state storage will always be faster and more durable than hard drives. As Katharine noticed in her review, the P10’s read and write speeds are only half the speed Samsung T5. However, buying an equal amount of space on multiple T5s will now cost you around £500, so half the performance isn’t really a bad compromise to save five times. Besides, the P10 is not slow by specific HDD standards, on par with modern internal hard drives.
It should also be pointed out that the P10 is not a clunky brick like the old external hard drives. It packs that 5TB of capacity into a remarkably small package – just 118mm long and 88mm wide. At 230g, it’s also pretty light, about the weight of a family-sized chocolate bar (also known as a Rick-sized chocolate bar).
Either way, the P10 is a great way to significantly expand your data storage capacity. After all, modern PC gaming is a constant battle for disk space. As game installs grew from tens to hundreds of gigabytes (I’m looking at you, Warzone), we reached a point where a 500GB drive could be used up to by just three or four games. So the P10 is a great way to offload the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla installation you’re resting on, or store all the HD videos of your victories in Apex Legends.
