Ryder Cup 2023: Davis Love III named vice-captain of US team as Zach Johnson calls for another former frontman
The USA Ryder Cup team announced on Tuesday that captain Zach Johnson has appointed Davis Love III as vice-captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone from September 29 – October 1. With Steve Stricker in the dressing room, Johnson made the decision to bring in another former captain to Love.
“I’ve been in the Ryder Cup since 2006 and I can tell you, without a doubt, Davis Love III’s passion for the event is second to none,” Johnson said. “When I think about Team USA 2023 and the people that we would recommend as Vice Captain, Davis will certainly be one of those individuals. I will rely heavily on experience and insights. DLIII in Italy as Team USA working to retain the Ryder Cup.”
Love attended the Ryder Cup six times as a player before taking on a consistent leadership role for the United States. The 58-year-old served as captain in both the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cup events. In 2012, Europe overcame a 10-6 deficit in Sunday Singles to eventually win 14, 5-13.5 in what is now known as “The Miracle of Medinah”. Four years later, Love was given another chance to be captain of the United States and exacted revenge with a 17-11 victory at Hazeltine National.
Most recently, Love captained Team USA to a 17.5-12.5 victory over Team International at the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club.
“The Ryder Cup is one of those truly special events in all of sports and I am honored to be appointed Vice-Captain in Italy in 2023,” said Love. “Zach has worked tirelessly since he was named Captain, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help Zach and the entire Team USA win in September.”
Although Team USA currently owns the Ryder Cup following a 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits in 2021, it is still champion in Europe after 30 years. Capable of introducing a youth team with many players yet to play in the Ryder Cup on European soil, the Love III experience could prove invaluable.
