Looks like Ryan Garcia is on track to have a breakout year.
After peeling off the deck for the first time in his career against Luke Campbell on New Year’s Day, Garcia went on to score a seventh-half goal. Although major mind battles have been arranged in the coming months, the 23-year-old has spent a long time fixing on the sidelines as he deals with mental health issues.
Once he feels fit and able, Garcia will return to the ring to face Joseph Diaz. However, due to a wrist injury that required surgery, Garcia is currently out of action for the rest of the year. But while he continues to work diligently to make his comeback, Garcia already knows who he wants to take on next.
“My return fight, I will fight [George] Kambosos,” Garcia said on her social media account.
Before last Saturday night, Kambosos Jr. considered an unrelated name in the light division. Although the Australian-born has set an undefeated record through 19 professional matches, no one can expect much from him in his upcoming bout against former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez.
However, Kambosos Jr stormed into Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City, Lopez’s hometown, continuing to knock and eventually beat the 24-year-old in front of a stunned crowd.
After his surprise win, it was revealed that, unlike most championship matches, there is no rematch clause. Meaning, Kambosos Jr is free to do whatever he wants. Currently, the 29-year-old Australian player has not been clear about his career direction. Instead, after beating the odds, he will return to Australia and enjoy the fruits of his labor. At least temporarily.
For Garcia, a return to the ring comes on the cards in the first quarter of 2022. And while he has boldly stepped forward as someone willing to join his first title defense. Kambosos Jr., first and foremost after 24 years-old believes that what the unified champion is unlikely to have achieved is worthy of its moment in the sun.
