NZ Archives reveals historic health record breach

The National Archives of New Zealand Archives NZ has revealed instances of unauthorized access to historical health records that happened three months ago.

On September 19, a former employee of Archives NZ informed the agency that some digitized health records dating back to the 1950s had been made in open access by mistake. These recordings, which were restricted to the public, inadvertently became viewable to public users of the Rosetta digital imaging system.

Records include Sunnyside Hospital admission records from 1952-56; a 1968 diary and an admission book from 1966-1973 for admitted criminals.

The agency then immediately restricted access to the records and formally notified both the Privacy Commission and Te Whatu Ora of the potential privacy breach.

“We sincerely apologize for this incident, which was caused by human error. We want to reassure you that immediate remedial steps have been taken. We understand if you may feel anxious or worried. worried about this breach of information,” the chief archivist said in the statement.

So far, it is known only that two members of the public accessed the aforementioned records in August. According to Archives NZ, “it could not be determined whether images were downloaded or shared during access events.”

However, the agency has “a high degree of confidence that scope is limited and that this is a one-off case of human error rather than systemic problems.”
