Day two of the June 13 Ocala 2-Year-Old and Racing Age Horse Sale looked a lot like day one as session leaders on both days sold at similar prices each is 400,000 USD.
Thursday’s highest priced horse to make it into the sale was Brown sugar a chubby 2 year old baby Rotating candy . John Stewart’s Resolute Bloodstock has dropped the hammer for Hip 509, consigned by Tom McCrocklin. McCrocklin also consigned best-selling products from Day 1 of sales.
“Really strong breeze, gallop, clean check, all the things you need too,” McCrocklin said. “Worked 20 and 2 and galloped very fast. I’m glad Resolute Racing bought her. I think they made a very, very good purchase.”
Resolute hope is struck twice by lightning when the sire and dam—Cashmere—come together for Rombauer , who won the 2021 Preakness Stakes (G1) and was third in the Belmont Stakes (G1). This dam’s second dam, Ultrafleet, produced graded winners California Flag and Cambiocorsa.
“If you look at the second dam, there are a lot of good horses there. It’s a very deep pedigree. And for someone like Mr. Stewart, who is buying mares with pedigree and horse prospects potential racing breed, for me this is obvious I think she is one of the two best horses in the auction and I’m really glad they got her and think she has a The future is bright,” McCrocklin said.
Brown Sugar’s accomplished brother was 3-1-2 in eight starts and earned $1,040,500 in earnings. Rombauer enrolled this year and earned $6,000 at War Horse Place near Lexington. Twirling Candy is available at Lane’s End near Versailles, Ky., for $60,000.
Twirling Candy is the son of six millionaires, led by Gear racing who has entered the Breeders’ Cup three times and earned more than $1.5 million.
Brown Sugar, like her brother, was bred by John and Diane Fradkin. She has been entered in four other sales, three of which resulted in RNA ( Fasig Tipton’s November 2022 sale, Keeneland’s September 2023 sale and the OBS spring sale for for 2 year olds who are training this year). Her successful run in the ring before Thursday was in the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Sale when Mustang Farm paid $140,000 for her from the Gainesway consignment.
Brown Sugar is one of nine Cashmere foals. Six of those have started and all have won. Besides Rombauer, Tapizar’s Treasure Trove is the second largest earner with earnings of more than $500,000.
Also notable in Thursday’s session was Hip 624, one justification completed the consignment of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds purchased by Tom Durant for $310,000. The dam, Etching, has been lightly raced in just six career starts but the colt’s second dam is Summerly, whose best graded stakes win came in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) this year. 2005.
The second session saw 193 units sold out of a total of 250 units offered for total sales of $6,911,900. This number decreased by 8.6% compared to the second session last year. There were 348 hips classified for this session.
Last year’s second day saw 216 sold for proceeds of $7,561,200, including hips not sold in the ring but sold by mail or sold privately after the horse leave the ring. There were 57 animals that did not meet their stocks on Thursday with an RNA rate of 22.8%.
The average price increased slightly compared to last year, from 35,006 USD to 35,813 USD (up 2.3%). The average price held steady at $20,000 without change.
