Roman, Wong, Tommy Town Lead Golden Gate Winter / Spring


Jockey Evin Roman, coach Jonathan Wong and owner Tommy Town Thoroughbreds finished at the top of the leaderboard in their respective categories at the Winter/Spring 2022 meeting that just ended in Golden Gate Field. The Winter/Spring Meeting, one of three annual meetings at the Golden Gate, runs from December 26, 2021 through last Sunday, June 12.

Evin Roman, 24, of Puerto Rico, won the most races of any horse race at the Winter/Spring 2022 meeting with 87 trips to the winners’ circle. He ended the meeting four wins over runner-up Pedro Terrero and made $1,745,152 in winnings in his wallet. Earlier in his career, Roman won five equestrian titles at Southern California racetracks throughout 2017 and was awarded the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Rider that year.

Jonathan Wong, of the Gulf, won his fifth consecutive coaching title at the Winter/Spring 2022 meeting. Wong started the most horses of any conditioning by a large margin and accumulated 71 wins from 349 people started at the meeting, which equates to a 20% win rate. Wong won a pair of bets in a meet with the California-bred Bettor Trip Nick in El Dorado Shooter Stakes and Sadie Bluegrass in Camilla Urso Stakes for mare and dwarf sprinters.

Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC has scored 19 wins from 90 starts and won the most races of any owner at the meeting. Top runners from their outfit include ranked stakes placed in her own Dynasty sprinter, Speed ​​Day Plan, 3-year-old pony As Matter of Fact and Opening Buzz, who earned a 92 Beyer speed figure for a dazzling first win of the week ending. All of Tommy Town’s horses are trained by Jonathan Wong.

The Bay Area Equestrian Championship shifts to the Northern California fairground circuit for the next two months, with live races in Pleasanton, Sacramento and Santa Rosa. Pleasanton and Sacramento are operated by the California Association of Racing Fairs (CARF) while Santa Rosa operates as its own organization. *Friday, August 26 is the scheduled Opening date for Golden Gate Fields to begin summer racing, although the summer date must be approved by the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) before any date completed and official.
