Rimac harnesses its smart electric supercar for energy storage technology

Supercar maker Rimac is launching a battery-powered energy storage business.

According to a company press release, the new business unit, called Rimac Energy, will leverage the company’s EV expertise for stationary energy storage systems, starting with pilots with those selected customer. It’s a new path for Rimac, the company that previously launched Concept_One and Nevera electric supercars, and is also known for driving Bugatti.

With 60 dedicated employees, Rimac Energy has developed a new battery architecture that reduces performance loss by up to 50%, while reducing footprint by 40%, according to the company. Rimac also promises “competitive installation and material costs.”

Rimac Energy will initially focus on large-scale projects for commercial, industrial and utility applications that, according to the release, “with battery buffer solutions for fast charging and high capacity already underway. onion.”

The company claims there will be more discussions about possible energy storage projects, including “a pilot with a leading renewable energy company.” Production of the pilot energy storage systems is expected to begin at Rimac’s campus near Zagreb, Croatia, before the end of the year, with installation in 2024. Rimac aims to follow that. with mass production in 2025, with a final production capacity of a “double-digit gigawatt hour range”.

Rimac has had a number of automotive partners over the years, and while tightening ties with Porsche, effort with Hyundai seems to have disappeared.

Energy storage puts the company on a potentially lucrative path—entire battery factories are springing up keep up with the demand for energy storage—but one has been trampled by other automakers. Renault in 2018 announced plans for one of Europe’s largest installations, with at least 60 megawatt-hours of storage. In addition to smaller and more efficient motors, Lucid has also focused on smart batteries and plans to eventually Tapping into the energy storage market.

Ultimately, that could create a myriad of potentially overwhelming possibilities for navigating the home turf, with battery companies, automakers, charging vendors, and possibly even utilities all on board. are looking to put their name on such products. That’s where synthesis tools like Hyundai Home can help.
