Review Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid Edition 2023

There are many families in a hurry in Australia.

Orders for fast CHEAP Volkswagen Tiguan The family transport company was recently closed due to VW Australia’s efforts to clear a significant backlog. They are reopeningbut only on the back of the stock of the stock of Germany.

A lot of people obviously want to get their hands on this hot SUV, and there aren’t enough to go around.

Along with the “production improvement” of the regular Tiguan R for Australia, Volkswagen has launched Grid version as a solution.

No heated, power-adjustable front seats, no IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights and no blind-spot or rear cross-traffic assist (among other omissions), version Tiguan R Grid Edition 2023 not as well equipped as the regular model.

But it makes up for that fact by offering similar performance, packing a matching set of front seats, and $6500 off the sticker price. You even get a unique badge, which in the case of some of our testers was a bit misleading.

It’s a compelling proposition on paper. Does it overlap in the real world?

How much does Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid Edition cost?

Tiguan R Grid Edition starts at $63,990 before circulation$6500 cheaper than the regular Tiguan R.

There aren’t many direct rivals for the Tiguan R at its regular price, let alone the Grid Edition price.

The Mercedes-AMG GLB35 similar in concept but cost about six figures, and Audi SQ5 TDI start over $100,000.

If you don’t need all that space, the Tiguan R has a little brother in the form of CHEAP T-Roc. It starts at $54,300 before hitting the road in similarly equipped Grid Edition form.

What’s inside the Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid Edition like?

Not much has changed from the regular Tiguan R behind the wheel, which isn’t a bad thing.

The only real difference is the front seats, which are more monochromatic than the standard leather seats. They are finished in blue and gray, and look purposeful.

Since they’re incredibly supportive and comfortable, while retaining heat, you could argue they’re even an improvement over the standard leather seats on the sports SUV.

The steering wheel is the same flat-bottomed type as on the R – complete, unfortunately, with the same silly touch buttons – and you get the same great set of digital dials capable of displaying maps, machine calculate your journey or control the vehicle.

While the sports seats look fancy, they’re set high enough to offer the sweeping views of the road ahead as you’d expect in an SUV. With large windows and a reasonably boxy configuration, all-round visibility is excellent.

That makes the loss of blind spot assist more tolerable, although we also wish there were more safety features than standard equipment.

Volkswagen’s infotainment software is clean and simple to navigate, the graphics are modern but feel easy to use rather than flashy or stand out.

With wireless Apple CarPlay, it’s easy to bypass native software, and a pair of USB-C ports work to ensure every device is fully powered.

The cup holders, the spacious center console, the perforations under the dashboard and the large door stowage give you plenty of room to stow away. It’s very realistic and feels significantly larger than the T-Roc R we drove around the same time.

Space for the rear seats is quite good, despite the Tiguan’s compact appearance.

There’s room for medium-sized adults behind average-sized adults, with plenty of legroom and vents, a fold-down center armrest and a USB-C port, all of which will help kids I am comfortable on long trips.

Along with the top trio of fasteners, there are ISOFIX anchors in the outer rear seats.

It’s rare, but the sunroof in our test didn’t damage that rear space either.

Whether that’s an option worth ticking off the more Budget Oriented Grid is up for debate; we think it makes a reasonably premium SUV even more premium.

The required boot space is 615 litersextended to 1655L with the rear seats folded. The trunk is flat, spacious, without loading edges, so it’s easy to put heavy items inside.

What’s under the bonnet?

The power in the Tiguan R comes from a 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol engine do 235kW power and 400Nm of torque. The car in Europe has 420Nm of torque, but also has a petrol particulate filter (PPF).

That tune is expected to arrive Down Under eventually, but it’s unclear when.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and has a 100 km/h sprint time of 5.1 seconds according to Volkswagen.

Fuel economy is claimed as 8.8 liters/100kmand the fuel tank keeps 58 liters. Premium unleaded 98 RON petrol car.

How does the Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid Edition drive?

The regular Tiguan R and the R Grid have identical driving feel. It’s a good thing.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is smooth and quiet at low speeds, with plenty of torque to help you break through at low rpm. In the default Sport mode, it glides around town without making a fuss, aided by a seven-speed transmission.

With no real hesitation or awkwardness at low speeds, the powertrain just does what it needs to do.

Put your foot down though and it really gets moving on. The DSG will kick down one, two, even three gears when you hit the gas, putting you right into the engine’s torque – at which point the Tiguan will pick up and start spinning across the horizon at speed. nautical miles.

It’s not just a rocket attached to a roller skate. On tight, winding country roads, the Tiguan R is more agile than you’d expect, with solid body control with adaptive dampers set to Race and traction from all-wheel drive. time.

You don’t get the same level of agility as the smaller T-Roc R in the front end, but there’s just a slight lack of steering on the way into corners, and once the Grid is rotated you can rely on the towing 4Motion System You go out in a hurry.

On bumpy roads covered in leaves, the R doesn’t get deflected by mid-corner turns and doesn’t get sidetracked by debris or changing pavement. Volkswagen R models tend to emphasize all-weather performance, and the Tiguan is no exception.

You’re also not forced to make many compromises to the Tiguan R’s handling.

With the adaptive dampers set to Comfort, ride quality is surprisingly good for a small SUV on 21-inch alloy wheels.

It doesn’t crash and rush through potholes and speed bumps, and even at high speeds it does a good job of isolating occupants on bad pavement.

While entry-level models with smaller wheels and larger sidewalls are more comfortable, they don’t handle like the Rs.

The main trade-off is road noise, which is a common problem for high-performance European cars.

It’s not shrill, but you’ll need to turn up the stereo a few times to drown out the roar at 100 km/h over a rough surface.

Volkswagen’s driver assistance suite is also very smart. The adaptive cruise control system intelligently maintains the distance from the vehicle in front and assists in keeping lanes simple.

CarExpert tests Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid Edition

Choosing the Mesh Edition doesn’t detract from what is already a convincing step towards the fast family SUV formula.

The racer boy in me prefers the fixed headrests in the Grid to the more plush seats in the standard Tiguan, and the fact that they’re manually adjusted isn’t exactly a big sacrifice to earn. $6500 savings.

The loss of the active safety kit is arguably harder to accept, although not everyone who buys a Grid will be surprised to learn it’s lost. We will also be removing the Grid Edition badges from the start…

Aside from the specs changes, the Tiguan R remains a fun, fast, and practical SUV for parents in a hurry. It’s not quite as lively as its T-Roc R sibling, but it still weighs in on it when the road gets interesting.

And, the whole family can enjoy the fun.
