When the I-Pace debuted in 2018, Jaguar was ahead of its time.

Instead of building an electric vehicle (EV) on an internal combustion engine platform, the company developed its own EV platform to take advantage of the performance and economic benefits that electric vehicles are meant to bring.

Fast-forward to this day and most manufacturers are now following suit, striking a balance between their internal combustion electric car models before launching purpose-built models.

With the advent of the brand’s cutting-edge Pivi Pro infotainment system and Alexa integration, we wanted to get behind the wheel to see if the I-Pace still performs as well as it did when it launched.

How much does Jaguar I-Pace cost?

Jaguar has simplified the I-Pace range by cutting it down to just two variants. The 2022 range starts with the I-Pace SE, priced from $142,580 before touring, and drops with the I-Pace HSE at $155,550 before touring.

Buyers can choose from eight exterior colors for the I-Pace, with two more premium metallic color options available for $3900.

Is Jaguar I-Pace safe?

What’s inside the Jaguar I-Pace?

At first glance, the I-Pace features a premium interior with a focus on minimalism and technology.

There are premium finishes on the top of the panel and extensive use of brushed aluminum and piano black. I am not a big fan of black piano, but it has been used very sparingly in this application.

At the heart of the cabin is Pivi Pro, Jaguar Land Rover’s new infotainment system. Unlike most systems on the market, it’s always on, meaning it doesn’t have to wait for the system to activate and come in handy once you’re in the driver’s seat.

The previous version of this infotainment system – InControl – was extremely slow and took up to a minute to start up before you could enter commands or perform basic functions like using satellite navigation.

The Pivi Pro has recently benefited from an over-the-air update that adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Alexa connectivity.

Jaguar has programmed the car with the ability to update over the air to improve the vehicle’s functionality as it ages. It allows the company to offer new features like wireless smartphone mirroring and Alexa functionality for free to customers.

The Alexa tool is interesting because it can be used to control your devices at home, so you can turn on the air conditioner with voice commands while driving home. Or perhaps you want to turn on your driveway lights or open your garage – all of which can be done with voice commands from your car.

The infotainment system measures 10.0 inches and has a smaller 5.0-inch companion screen below. The lower screen controls the climate control system, while the upper screen is dedicated to audio and satellite navigation.

In front of the driver is a 12.3-inch digital display that includes computer information about the trip and other important functions. For some reason, you can only get a 10.0-inch display in the I-Pace, where the F-Pace and other Jaguar Land Rover products can be optionally fitted with a premium-looking 14.0-inch display. much more.

I’d love to see that option as the large space on either side of the display in its cluster is currently only filled with a piano black finish. It seems like a bit of a waste.

We love how the Pivi Pro works. The speed of the system is top notch; it’s fast, user-friendly and loaded with features.

Remote connectivity is also available via the Jaguar app. It allows you to lock and unlock the car, in addition to viewing the charging status and activating the climate control remotely. The app made big improvements in its previous iteration, which was slow and a bit clumsy in terms of performance.

What about the rest of the cabin? The i-Pace is now available with wireless phone charging (which was an odd omission at launch) with plenty of storage below the lower display, a spacious center console, and a glovebox. moderate size.

The second row has enough room for adults with knees, toes and ample space. We love the optional panoramic glass roof. It stretches all the way behind the heads of second-row passengers, and brings more light into the cabin.

You’ll find a set of ISOFIX anchor points, along with top tether points suitable for child seats. Cargo space stands at 656 liters with the second row of seats and 1453 liters with the second row of seats folded flat. There’s also a small storage space under the bonnet for things like power cables.

What’s under the bonnet?

Powering the Jaguar I-Pace is a pair of electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear axle.

Combined, they produce 294kW of power and 696Nm of torque. They combine to deliver a claimed 100km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds.

Under the floor is a 90kWh The battery pack can be charged via single-phase AC or DC fast charging.

Single-phase AC charging takes place at up to 7.2kW, while cars can charge up to 104kW at an average charge rate of about 84kW using a DC fast charger.

Charge rates are a bit disappointing compared to newer EVs. Even the mid-spec Tesla Model 3 can charge at peaks of around 250kW on the latest V3 Tesla supercharger.

WLTP driving range is claimed to be 470 km. During testing, we averaged not far from 21kWh/100km, resulting in a driving range of around 400km.

How does the Jaguar I-Pace drive?

Just like every other electric vehicle on the market, the I-Pace operates almost silently. It accelerates hard, but it doesn’t scream about it.

Jaguar did a great job of regenerative braking, allowing the car to come to a near-complete stop. If it tilts a little, the I-Pace will stop and the auto hold will activate, but there are some cases where it doesn’t stop completely and continues to roll lightly.

That’s a bit confusing and takes a while to figure out – my preference would be for the car to come to a complete stop all the time, or not. Halfway situations don’t give you confidence behind the wheel.

At low speeds, the steering is light and there’s plenty of emphasis from the dual-engine setup. Just under 700Nm of torque is a big punch in the rear and is more than enough to attract vehicular engagement.

Even if you don’t opt ​​for the air suspension, the passive setup still provides more than enough comfort. The 20-inch alloy wheels don’t compromise ride quality much and offer a good balance between sportiness and comfort. That’s even on things like cobblestones, potholes, and speed bumps, which are often frustrating for a vehicle with large wheels and poor tires.

In water, the powerful powertrain provides enough power to overtake and overtake slower vehicles. The wheelbase is just under 3000mm, which causes ride quality and body control issues in the similarly sized Hyundai Ioniq 5, but most of that has been avoided here.

While the I-Pace can feel a bit bouncy on successive sine-wave crashes, it retains a sportier feel – even to the extent you can switch it to sport and take advantage of the feedback. Instant throttle response to accelerate. corners.

The body sits fairly flat and there’s enough communication through the steering wheel to really put a smile on your face. It’s exactly what a Jaguar should be: sporty, but comfortable. BMW has gone in the opposite direction with 2022 iXsuper soft and bouncy… in contrast to all other BMW products.

Visibility out of the cabin is very good to the front and sides. The wing mirrors are also integrated with a blind-spot monitor to assist in moving back and forth. Visibility to the rear is reasonable, but the window surrounds are rather narrow.

However, you can choose a digital mirror, which solves that problem manually.

How much does a Jaguar I-Pace cost to run?

The I-Pace is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty, with the battery covered by an eight-year/160,000 km warranty.

Service over a five-year period is free, which is good because there’s not much more to service on an electric vehicle compared to an internal combustion vehicle.

Jaguar I-Pace is one of the pioneers in the premium electric vehicle segment. Jaguar has put time and effort into building a bespoke electric platform to take advantage of economy and storage capacity.

Behind the wheel, the I-Pace is one of the most attractive premium electric vehicles on the market. It grips the road well and handles exactly as a Jaguar should. Recent technology additions and the introduction of the Pivi Pro have also enhanced the technology offering.

Still, it’s hard not to feel Jaguar could fall behind. Outside of tech updates, the I-Pace has remained fairly stagnant since it launched in 2018.

Rivals like BMW with the all-new iX have really shown the market where the electric vehicle space is leading. The entry-level IX is about the same price as the I-Pace SE and seems like a better product in terms of technology.

As Jaguar transitions to all-electric vehicles in 2025, it will need to go even further to compete.
