Repsol extends funding agreement with HRC until 2024
Spanish petrol giant Repsol has announced that it has extended its sponsorship of Honda’s factory team for another two seasons.
The Spanish consortium will continue to sponsor the Repsol Honda team until 2024, marking the 30th anniversary of their contract, which is the longest sponsorship in history.
While the announcement is hardly a surprise, it puts an end to what has become a quasi-yearly ritual of speculation about whether Repsol will continue with HRC. For the next two years, Repsol remained the same.
An interesting incentive for Repsol to continue sticking with Honda is the fact that MotoGP is about to switch to using non-fossil fuel sources. From 2024, 40% of the fuel used in MotoGP must come from non-fossil sources, and this number will increase to 100% by 2027.
With pressure on sports cars and oil companies to speed up decarbonisation, MotoGP is an ideal laboratory to produce hydrocarbon fuel sources of similar performance but derived from non-chemical sources. jelly.
This is an opportunity other oil companies may choose to follow, with Shell backing Ducati and Petronas still heavily involved on some levels.
