Video games and sports have much overlap and we spent a lot of time trying to recreate our favorite stunts and moves in different sports games, but NASCAR racer Ross Chastain did the opposite – he recreated a move he did in NASCAR 2005: Chasing the Cup on GameCube for security final place of qualifying for the championship.

Chastain does this spectacularly, leave it until last minute to secure the final spot of qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series 4 Championship next weekend in 2022.
In the post-match interview (above), Chastain was asked “how did you ever dream of a scenario where something like that would be what you needed to do and then it would work?” , This racer credits the 2004 GameCube racer for the Idea:
“Oh, I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube with Chad growing up and you could get away with it, and I never knew if it really worked. I mean, I did the thing. Then when I was 8 years old and I got a hold of the fifth number, I asked Alpha number two in the last round if we needed it and we did.I couldn’t tell who was leading and I just made a choice. ; I grabbed the fifth number in the back and fully committed.
Once I’m up against the wall, I’m basically going to get in the wheel and just hope I don’t come across the entrance to the turn floor or something crazy, but I’m willing to do it. “
So, all the times you’ve outdone your friends in racing games by hugging the wall, and all the times they’ve called you a cheater? Show them this. It’s all skill and courage, and the fact that someone has done it in the sport itself is actually pretty amazing.
NASCAR 2005 was released on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube in 2004, and on all three platforms, it received critical acclaim for its production value, gameplay, and sound. It was even awarded GameSpot’s “Best Driving Game”, but it lost out to a small game called Burnout 3: Uninstall.
