A total of 10 races will begin the 20th season of the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races on Tuesday, April 19 at Horseshoe Indianapolis, formerly Indiana Grand. The card, which begins at 2:30 p.m., features nine Thoroughbred races that end with a Quarter Horse race.
The racing program introduced with a $38,000 grant is expected to be the sixth race on the card. A full field of 12 will enter the gates for a five-stage race with the Flying Samurai and top jockey of 2021 Marcelino Pedroza Jr leading the race as the early morning favorites. Five-year-old First Samurai gelding makes his 2022 debut from column 10 with a 3-1 margin from stable team Robert Dobbs Jr.
Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing said: “We are very pleased with the number of entries on opening day. “Our entire team has been working hard to prepare for this year’s meeting with the new name Horseshoe Indianapolis. We hope to build on the success we had last year and we welcome several. New faces come to our team, this will only enhance our race program.”
One of the new faces is the recognizable voice of Race Broadcaster John G. Dooley, who has provided race calls for hundreds of Ranked Stakes during his career and is radio broadcaster. current track member at the Fair Grounds. Brian Arrigoni will also add his unique racing analysis to the daily Thoroughbred race program, which specializes in multi-race bets including Pick 5, which is very popular with racing fans across the country due to 11.99% win rate. Arrigoni will be highlighted by “Pick the Ponies with Arrigoni”, a special opening day disability competition. The competition will include selections for Choice 5 in Races 5 – 9 with the top three acceptors sharing the $350 prize pool. The competition is open to all players both on the road and online.
Four of the top five jockey games from 2021 are expected to go on the opening day card. Marcelino Pedroza Jr., DeShawn Parker, Sammy Bermudez and Joe Ramos, who finished first through fourth, respectively in the standings will ride in Indiana this year. Randy Klopp, the 2021 Top Coach, is also back and will be seventh for the opening day card.
The 20th season of the Thoroughbred and Quarterly races begins Tuesday, April 19 and runs through Wednesday, November 23. Live races begin at 2:30pm from Monday through Wednesday with Thursday’s posting time set at 3:30pm.
