Last time he made it look easy.
Those who felt that George Kambosos would embarrass Devin Haney the way he confused Teofimo Lopez, were sadly mistaken when the two men met in Kambosos’ hometown of Australia in June . While Kambosos’ skill set surprised Lopez on his way to winning senior Lopez’s IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight titles, it was Kambosos who was overwhelmed when he faced Haney in the first place, And for the last time, protect those belts. Now, however, Kambosos has a chance to win those belts back – along with the WBC lightweight title when he takes on Haney for the second time tomorrow.
However, most people expect a replay of the first fight – if not in terms of style, then at least in terms of dominating the ring. Haney is expected to win and win big on Saturday, although Kambosos is certainly determined, and although he does face Kambosos again in this man’s home country of Australia. While it is true that Kambosos 20-1 is an excellent fighter, 28-0 Haney looks as if he could be a great fighter… and the gap between excellence and greatness is huge.
It’s worth noting, of course, that Kambosos shocked a lot of people by getting better than Lopez. However, Lopez is not as calm as Haney in the ring. The truth is that the undisputed lightweight champion, Haney is a great customer. He also has some big names – some very big – that could be waiting for him if he bestes Kambosos a second time. Naturally, he will have to win this weekend if he wants his future to remain as bright as this. Otherwise, the Kambosos must win to continue in the conversation. Haney-Kambosos 2 will air live on ESPN and ESPN+ starting at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday.
