Polestar 3 entry price reduced with slower, longer-range model

The Pole Star 3 is getting more affordable with the introduction of a new rear-wheel-drive base model with longer range.

Polestar Australia has confirmed the new information North Star 3 The single-engine long-range electric vehicle will be available to order locally later this year, after the electric SUV’s launch was delayed to late August.

As the name suggests, the latest member of the Polestar 3 range is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor instead of the dual-motor all-wheel drive system that was previously standard across the range.

Polestar 3 has a single engine with 220kW of power and 490Nm of torque, helping it accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.

This represents a reduction of 140kW and 350Nm over the base dual-motor electric SUV, completing the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.0 seconds.

Equipped with the same 107kWh (usable) lithium-ion battery pack as the other models, the single-motor Polestar 3 unlocks a driving range of 650km on the WLTP lab test cycle – or 19km more than the cheapest dual-motor version, according to the brand’s German website.

The battery pack is capable of DC fast charging at up to 250kW, increasing the state of charge from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes.

There appear to be no changes to the Polestar 3’s standard equipment for the single-engine version, which can also be ordered via existing option packs in Europe.

In Germany, prices start at €78,590 – the equivalent of $126,650 – which is €7,000 ($11,280) less than the cheapest dual-motor Polestar 3 on the market.

Prices for the Polestar 3 in Australia start from $132,720 before on-road costs. Pricing for the new model in our market is yet to be announced.

Production of the Polestar 3 in China – supplied to markets including Australia – began in February, although the electric SUV’s launch there was later delayed from June to the end of the month 8.

Both the Polestar 3 and its Volvo EX90 twin have been delayed multiple times, while production of the electric SUV in China was originally scheduled to begin in Q4 2023 (October to December), with deliveries in Australia expected to begin in early 2024.

The first global delivery of the Polestar 3 took place this week in Sweden, where a Chinese-made car was handed over to one of the brand’s local customers.
