Pit Bull hero died to save children from mountain lion attack
Lady, a 2-year-old Pit Bull/Chihuahua mix girl, loves her family above all else. Whenever the family’s four kids play outside, Lady won’t be far behind. Until recently, playtime was relaxing and fun, but when a mountain lion approached the yard, Lady’s guard kicked in.
In a terrifying battle, Lady fought the massive mountain lion to make sure it stayed away from the young members of her family. At first, she gave up, but she didn’t have much longer to live. The family is devastated by her death but also grateful for her bravery. She is a real hero!
Dog Takes on Mountain Lion
Virginia Havens from Colorado said her four children, ages 4 to 11, were swinging in the backyard with Lady at their side. Virginia’s husband, Daniel, was outside cleaning his car when he heard a commotion behind him. Lady is barking aggressively, which doesn’t look like her.
When Virginia heard barking and screaming, she ran over to see what was happening. Daniel is frantically leading the children inside while Lady is charging at a mountain lion. The big cat was stalking the kids from behind the fence, just a few feet from the playground. Virginia said the mountain lion was about 5 feet long, but their little dog wouldn’t stop attacking it.
The family wants to help Lady, but it’s too dangerous for them. They called authorities and tried to throw objects at the mountain lion while they waited. Officers arrived within five minutes of the call, and they fired non-lethal rifle shots, causing the cat to eventually run away scared.

The lady trotted back into the house afterwards, but her appearance was rough. So the family rushed her to the vet.
Virginia said: ‘She was covered in blood and had a hole in her skull. “As she got closer, I could see her right eye bulging and she had trouble breathing.”
Lady sacrifices her life
The family wrapped Lady in a towel and took her to the nearest vet. Immediately, the vet informed them that the puppy’s chances of survival were slim. The vet gave Lady painkillers, but she continued to whine uncontrollably. So the family made the difficult decision to bring her down.
Virginia said: ‘The children were in tears, but seeing Lady like that also helped them understand the reason for letting her go. “We say goodbye and kiss Lady and thank her.”
Fortunately, the possibility of mountain lions returning is unlikely. The big cats often return to the place where they killed their prey so that they bury the leftovers and find them again. Even with that information, Virginia was hesitant to let the kids play outside for a while.
