Photographers, Print your photos | Fstoppers

Although I’ve probably taken millions of pictures at this point, I rarely print them out. I moved into a new house in 2022, and a year later, almost every wall is still empty. No more. I finally printed 10 giant pictures and bought two Samsung frame TV become art when they are not in use.

Reviews on Samsung Frame TVs

Let’s start with my new TV first. We don’t watch a lot of TVs in our household, and so our TVs have a black rectangle 99% of the time. That’s why I’m so excited to splurge on two Samsung Frame TV, claims to turn into art when you turn them off.

Other TVs claim to have an “art mode” but don’t give you much customization, and they cycle through the pictures every few seconds (which, in my opinion, completely defeats the point). purpose of this feature). As far as I know, Frame TV is currently the only TV available on the market that can display a still image for an unlimited period of time without image retention while matching the ambient light in the room. This app allows you to upload your own images and customize the blur color and size.

To look like a work of art, instead of a TV with a static image, the TV has an ambient light sensor that will use it to adjust the screen’s brightness to match the room. When it worked, it was amazing and it convinced everyone who had seen it that it was, in fact, a framed work of art and not a TV set.

The problem is that the ambient light sensor is not accurate. 30% of the time, the TV is so dark compared to the ambient light in the room, and sometimes, it’s so dark that the TV actually appears to be off when it’s not.

The TV will turn itself off completely to save power if no one is in the room and is supposed to turn back on when it senses motion, but this only works sporadically. Usually, about once a day, the TV will completely turn itself off and I will have to manually turn it back on.

I called Samsung support twice and was on the Frame TV Facebook group. Everyone has the same problems I have.

As a TV it’s fine, but I didn’t buy it for that. I bought it to be a customizable piece of art, and it feels like 50% of the time I walk into my living room, it just doesn’t look like art.

The most annoying thing is that I feel the hardware is very solid and with a simple software fix they can make this product perfect, but it seems like that won’t happen.

I can’t fully recommend Frame TV, especially at full retail price, but if you can buy one for sale“art mode” is still better than any other TV on the market.

Real prints

I also need to hang some outdated prints around my house. Digital Saal offered to sponsor this project, and I ordered a variety of products from them.

Saal Digital currently sells a wide variety of photo print products, but they also sell standard prints on a variety of papers. Standard papers include silk, matte, and glossy, but they also sell Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, Hahnemuhle Bamboo, Hahnemuhle Hemp, and Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper.

The properties of these different papers are difficult to explain, but all Hahnemuhle papers have a soft and fibrous feel. They are closer to watercolor paper than standard photo paper. While there’s something to appreciate about each different type of paper, if you were to force me to choose my favorite, I’d probably go for the good, old-fashioned matte photo paper. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the cheapest options.

frame

I ordered a bunch of really cheap 11×17 frames on Amazon and I got exactly what I paid for. The frames are super light, and instead of glasses, they have a flexible glass front that reflects light in weird ways. I can’t recommend them, so I’m not affiliated with them.

Digital Saal also sells ready-to-hang framed prints and I bought two of them. The frame is extremely sturdy and made of solid metal, the front is solid glass. There’s no comparison between my ultra-cheap Amazon frames and those from Saal Digital, but you’ll pay significantly more for the build quality and convenience.

The most expensive prints I buy are attached to acrylic. Saal Digital calls this premium product “GalleryPrint.” These cheat prints come with an aluminum subframe to make the prints appear to float a few millimeters from the wall. You can choose between matte or glossy finishes, and I bought a few of each.

Glossy prints look great, but they’re the most reflective I’ve seen, and due to the adjacent windows, it’s hard to fully appreciate prints that have all the reflections. If I could do it all over again, I’d buy everything with a matte finish, but if I were to install them in a room with no adjacent windows, I’d definitely go for the glossy one.

Now that I’ve finally hung art in every room of the house, I really feel like I’ve completely moved in. I don’t understand why I was so bad at printing photos before. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, but for some reason I’ve always been too lazy to do it. If you can relate, I hope I can inspire you to show your work. We’ve all worked so hard to take great photos, and they shouldn’t die alone on some forgotten hard drive. If you’re looking for a place to get high quality prints, be sure to consider Digital Saal.
