Photo printing makes you a better photographer

Glyn Dewis discusses the reasons behind thinking that printing makes us better photographers. He looks at eternal jet and give some reasons why you choose this paper over others and guide us on what makes a good paper for printing. He reviews ingredients like OBA (optical brighteners) and tells you why it’s good that some newspapers don’t have this.

Printing is something every photographer needs to do. It’s not just a matter of what paper we choose and which printer gives the best results. Understanding how to convert colors from a backlit screen to a piece of paper (or rag in this case) is key to making our images accessible and available for the longest time. He explains what archival paper is and why it would be better to print images that will be seen for a long time.

The article he checked was Permajet’s fine fabric 310, Baryta Rag 310, Engraved Rag 310 and Watercolor Rag 310x. All printed on Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300.

I have Canon PIXMA PRO-200, similar, but does not use dye filler ink, which is the standard ink that most inkjet printers use. Even still, the results are excellent.

Glyn’s tone and explanations of archival paper versus standard paper are, as usual, on point and easy to understand. Be sure to check her out book.
