Phil Mickelson steals show as commentator for ‘The Match’

The fifth edition of “The Match” was the first in which golf legend Phil Mickelson didn’t compete, but he still managed to participate from somewhere else: the broadcast booth. He did not disappoint in his new role.

Friday’s event, which pitted rivals Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka against each other, was Mickelson’s official debut as a commentator – he had previously joined the booth as a guest. Twitter loves his contributions to the Turner production.

A unique element of “The Match” is that opponents have an airpod in one ear so they can constantly communicate with the broadcast crew. After DeChambeau hit the first “bomb” of the round, Mickelson asked him if he thought bombing made him more attractive.

Mickelson made headlines before the golfers headed into the course. He joined Bleacher Report’s pre-show to discuss the contest. Mickelson says he thinks Koepka will take the lead but DeChambeau will win. At least he was right about the first part. Koepka certainly reminded Mickelson that his prediction was wrong as he continued to dominate.

This isn’t the only thing Mickelson predicted on Friday. He frequently called Koepka approaches, and most of the time he was right.

At times, Mickelson’s talk of golfers has crossed the head of commentator Charles Barkley. Barkley makes sure to ask for clarification for himself or the casual golf fan.

Fans on Twitter are mostly positive about Mickelson. Many people ask him to become a broadcaster whenever he takes a break from golf. Lucky for them, it looks like Mickelson wants to continue his television career for the foreseeable future.
