Peugeot 408: Confirming the exciting crossover launch time

Peugeot Australia confirmed it will launch its medium size 408 ‘SUV coupe’ in the second half of 2023.

The 408 was first revealed last June and went on sale in Europe and China earlier this year.

Peugeot Citroen Australia CEO Kate Gillis says auto expert she can’t confirm what 408 Variations are coming at this stage, but hope to provide that information soon.

Government approval documentHowever, let’s list three distinct variants: Allure and GT models with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder and a top-of-the-line turbocharged plug-in hybrid GT model.

1.2 liters of production 96kW power and 230Nm torque, while the plug-in hybrid combines a 132kW turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with an 81kW electric motor and a 12.4kWh battery pack, for a total system output of 165kW.

Peugeot claims the WLTP’s electric-only range is up to 67 km and says it can be charged on AC power at a maximum speed of 3.7 kW, with the option to increase this to 7.4 kW.

All models have an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

Tariffs are listed at 1361kg on the petrol models and 1684kg on the plug-in hybrid, which also has a slightly higher towing capacity – up from 725kg without brakes and 1200kg to 750kg and 1400kg respectively.

According to the documents, a sunroof will be optional on GT versions, with the latter also getting “high-level lighting” as standard – likely matrix LED headlights instead of Allure’s LEDs.

Optional 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels will be available.

In the UK market, the base 408 Allure uses 17-inch alloy wheels but comes standard with LED headlights with automatic high beams, driving mode-linked ambient lighting, air conditioning. dual-zone rear, fabric upholstery, electrochromic rearview mirror. Electric folding outside rearview mirror with integrated approach light.

There’s also camera-based automatic emergency braking on petrol models and includes a radar on plug-in hybrid models, along with lane keep assist.

All 408 models also come standard with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.

In the UK, the GT also gets keyless entry and start, color-adjustable ambient lighting, Alcantara upholstery and leather effects, and “full 3D” LED taillights.

Additional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop/go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist and forward parking sensors.

Unusually for this segment, the 408 can also have night vision.

Peugeot had previously confirmed it would introduce an electric version of the 408 “several months later” of the combustion and plug-in hybrid models. It is not clear whether this will be provided here.

Peugeot 408 has dimensions of 4687mm long, 1848mm wide and 1478mm high with a wheelbase of 2787mm.

For context, the Peugeot 308 wagon SW 51mm shorter than the ‘coupe SUV’ 408 and upgrade 508 63mm longer.

The trunk with the second row of upright seats has a volume of 536L, which can be expanded to 1611L when the rear seats are folded.

While we don’t yet know how it will be priced in Australia, in the UK the 408 retails for around £4000 (A$7000) more in the UK than the related 308 hatchback.

For reference, the 308 in Australia starts at $43,990 before hitting the road, but will open with a GT version instead of the price-leading Allure.
