The Biden administration plans to ship $1 billion worth of weapons to Israel

Officials said the White House has notified Congress that it wants to send more than $1 billion worth of weapons to Israel.

According to Reuters news agency, this package will include tank ammunition, mortars and armored tactical vehicles.

The plan – confirmed by a congressional aide to CBS, the BBC’s US partner – must still be approved by lawmakers.

Last week, President Joe Biden said he would stop arms shipments to Israel if it launches a major invasion of the Gaza city of Rafah.

Palestinians told Reuters on Tuesday that Israeli tanks had advanced deeper into residential areas southeast of Rafah.

Last week, Mr. Biden said he was delaying the shipment of 2,000-pound (900kg) bombs to Israel because they could be used in such a ground operation.

When asked by CNN about the delay, Biden said: “Civilians have died in Gaza as a result of those bombs.”

The package sent to Congress is the first since the Biden administration halted arms transfers to Israel last week. According to the Associated Press, this amount will include $700 million in ammunition for tanks, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar ammunition.

On Friday, a US State Department report showed that some US-made weapons were supplied to Israel. may have been used to violate international law.

While the report is an apparent rebuke of some of Israel’s activities in Gaza, it does not make a definitive statement that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) campaign violated international law.

They added that the assurances they received from Israel regarding compliance with the lawful use of US weapons were “credible and trustworthy”.

Last month, Congress passed a $95 billion aid bill for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan.

The transfer of weapons to Israel has become a political liability for Mr. Biden ahead of the White House election this November 2024.

News of the latest weapons package comes shortly after voting closed in Maryland’s presidential primary, where activists had urged voters to register a ballot in protest of what they considered is Mr. Biden’s bias towards Israel in the war in Gaza.

Republican lawmakers in Congress have introduced legislation aimed at preventing any further halts in weapons shipments to US allies.

The House this week will vote on a measure that would require the State Department and Defense Department to ensure “prompt delivery” of military equipment.

The White House has vowed to veto the bill if it passes the Senate, which is unlikely.

Israel launched a military operation to destroy Hamas in response to the group’s cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, which left about 1,200 people dead and 252 others taken hostage. .

According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, more than 35,170 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 82 in the past 24 hours.
