Austin, Minn. – “Given that Jennie-O has a record of breaking and that producing vegan meat eliminates the risk of a slaughterhouse violation, what is Hormel doing to accelerate the transition to vegan-only production?” That’s the question a PETA representative will ask company executives at Hormel’s virtual annual meeting tomorrow.
PETA was recently approved by the United States Department of Agriculture documents April-July 2021 revealed multiple slaughter violations at the Melrose turkey slaughterhouse operated by Hormel subsidiary Jennie-O. On one day, 514 turkeys died on arrival, which one report described as an “ongoing concern.” On another day, on the conveyor belt going towards the carbon dioxide chamber, two cages had a layer of dead turkeys underneath. And for days, the turkeys showed signs of heat stress but were not provided with the fan or heater needed to cool them down, even when the temperature reached 93 degrees.
PETA notes that Hormel already offers its Happy Little Plants vegan product line – and demand for vegan meat continues to grow, with the global vegan meat market projected to reach $13 billion by 2026.
PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said: “The more consumers know about how gentle birds suffer and die from heatstroke before facing the slaughter knife, the more they want to go vegan. than. “PETA is urging Hormel to get out of the business of killing animals and move completely into producing the delectable vegan meats that today’s decent shoppers want.”
Early in the pandemic, PETA bought shares in Hormel along with shares in Tyson, Sanderson Farms, Maple Leaf Foods, Kraft Heinz (Oscar Mayer’s parent company) and the Chinese-owned WH Group (owner of Smithfield). Foods) —all with the aim of prompting them to switch to vegan meat production.
