One reason we might overlook the scents we spew out is that they don’t seem particularly appealing — how bad can a perfume really be? (Hint: If you don’t like harmful chemicals then pretty bad.) The fact that perfume formulas are considered trade secrets is not considered a trade secret in the largely unregulated world of perfumery, so when you see “fragrance” on the label, there is no How to know its exact composition. (Even “clean” is difficult to define properly when it comes to the beauty of anything.)
Scary? Sure. As a girl who is constantly on the hunt for a signature scent, I’m right there with you. But trust and believe that a world without harmful perfumes can still smell just as sweet thanks to the hard work of so many beautiful brands.

Such a thoughtful perfumer: Rosie Johnston, founder of By Rosie Jane, a California-made brand that prides itself on ingredient transparency. We reached out to celebrity makeup artist and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles to answer all of your questions about our burning clean fragrance brand.

What do you consider cleaning aroma?
In terms of perfumes or fragrances, “clean” usually means that the product is handcrafted without phthalates, parabens, endocrine disruptors, or any other potentially harmful ingredients.
“For me, a perfume is considered clean if it has transparency in its ingredients and is made using the safest ingredients possible,” says Johnston, whose brand is known as the brand. Full ingredient list for its perfumes.
What are the key ingredients to avoid in perfume?
“Phthalates and parabens are the most common ingredients to avoid when it comes to fragrance, but there are always new ingredients to watch out for,” Johnston explains. “But most perfume brands, clean or not, don’t list their ingredients. If you’re looking for a clean perfume, research the label and find one that has the values and authenticity you’re looking for. ”
What are some retailers you trust to buy “clean” beauty?
In addition to some of our favorite clean beauty retailers (like Credo or Follin), the perfumer shared a number of larger companies that are making organic, natural products, including easily accessible, clean fragrance brands.
“Sephora has really helped define cleanliness without making people feel bad about being unclean,” says Johnston. “They are very their standards are transparent and easy to understand. Thirteen Lune for JCPenney is also really making changes in the clean space by bringing “clean” to a much larger market.
“Cleanliness is for everyone and should be the norm no matter how much something costs,” says Johnston.
