Hyundai has confirmed the arrival of the Ioniq 6 electric sedan in the US in the first quarter of 2023, and it revealed a little more information about the startling model this week. We have looked at how, despite the common background and many common components, Ioniq 6 makes a very different design statement compared to Ioniq 5. And we’ve outlined how Ioniq 6 can significantly perform better in efficiency and driving range, due to a series of technical improvements. It will also be the first Hyundai to have full online updates.

We’re still watching the shift to hybrids as it allows every household, whether they have charging access or not, to reduce their dependence on oil and two key hybrid models were revealed in this week. A new generation of Honda CR-V is set to pack a new generation of Honda’s two-motor hybrid system with more torque, CR-V 2023 will emphasize the hybrid aspect moreover, aim for half the sales of the model line. And the Toyota Crown has also been revealed to be a “reconstructed” sedan, raising the ride height and roofline slightly compared to the Avalon it replaces, and adding some SUV cues. This is the first car to add Toyota Hybrid Max Performance Combination Systemdirect-wheel drive with engine torque front and rear — perhaps with less highway performance than the V-6 it replaces.

GM and Pilot this week delivered some big charging news. They present what could be the biggest open network challenge for Electrify America: a Coast-to-coast EV fast charging network powered with EVgo and fully included with 350 kw CCS hardware, at Pilot Flying J travel centers. It aims to install chargers every 50 miles — yes, with some money from engine building federal EV charging infrastructure — and 500 initial stations to be installed between 2023 and 2025.

EV startup Canoo, which recently questioned its own finances, was given a new life this week with an acquisition deal from Walmart. 4,500 electric trucks of the company for last-mile delivery.
GM revealed more teaser image for Cadillac Celestiq electric flagship sedan, and it has been confirmed that the model will make its debut as a show car on July 22. The new images have confirmed the throne-like seating for four, a rear canopy fast and screen real estate that covers the entire dashboard.

Panasonic has chosen the Kansas City, Kansas area for what it claims will be largest battery factory in the world (confirmed by investment amount, and presumably by GWh and region) —a “major factory” that will supply Tesla and other automakers with cylindrical cells. The battery manufacturer also revealed that it predicts a Increases energy density by 20% for its EV batteries by 2030 — which could help reduce battery size, extend range, or both.
Some Tesla Powerwall owners, in a pilot program with PG&E of California, will store the energy in their battery packs together as a “virtual power plant” for grid backup. With the financial incentive built into the program, this program can be a win-win solution for all participants and hopefully a proving ground for V2G.

German supplier Mahle claims that they have a “wear-free” engine can deliver 90% of maximum power continuously, meeting higher standards of durability that can be good for towing or performance cars — thanks to a new type of cooling system.
Redwood material is currently Official recycler for all Volkswagen and Audi EV batteries in North America, the companies announced earlier this week. VW and Audi join Ford and Toyota, among the companies that have a high percentage of raw material recovery goals.

Will battery charge faster enabling smaller battery packs and thus lighter EVs with reduced reliance on precious metals? That’s the premise behind several battery startups, and it could be the key to unlocking some cheaper electric cars for Americans.
One charging robot named Ziggy can bring a lot of convenience to parking locations and buildings that cannot easily reserve certain parking spots for electric vehicle charging. It offers charging cables and connectors on wheels, along with a screen that can display ads.
