As states across the country continue to count votes in a tight battle for control of the House of Representatives, the Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats “didn’t give up.”

“Whatever the outcome, we are well on our way to getting our country to a better place than being dragged down by the other side,” she told ABC’s “This Week” Sunday.

NBC estimates Republicans could win 219 seats in the House after all unresolved races — just over the 218 seats needed for a majority — while Democrats could win. 216 seats. The prediction has an error of plus or minus four seats.

Democrats hold their party razor-thin majority in the US SenateNBC News predicted on Saturday, blocking an all-out Republican attempt to fuel economic volatility and public discontent into control of the House of Representatives.

Republicans had hoped, and many had publicly predicted, a “red wave” that would remove Democrats from their majority in both branches of the legislature.

“Who would have thought two months ago that this ‘red wave’ would turn into a small, trickle of water,” Pelosi, a Democrat who is second in the presidential line of succession, told CNN “State of the Union” Sunday.

Pelosi said she has also been told that midterm voters have been affected by the Republican response to the violent attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, last month.

A California man, David DePape, broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco, wielding a hammer, and was prepare to kidnap and break the kneecap of Nancy Pelosi, federal prosecutors revealed in a criminal complaint.

Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, DC, at the time of the break-in, but her husband, Paul, 82, had a fractured skull and severe injuries to his right arm and hand.

While many members of Congress were quick express their support and best wishes to the couple, several Republicans shared misinformation and conspiracy theories about the attack. In a tweet that has since been deleted, Representative Clay Higgins (R-La.), who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, suggested that the attacker was a “naked hippie male prostitute. Dear.”

Pelosi told ABC that her husband was “making progress” and had “day in and day out,” but she told CNN the trauma of the attack was “increased” by her “ridiculous, disrespectful attitude” Republican Party.

“It’s not just the attack, it’s the Republican response to it, it’s disgraceful,” she told CNN.

DePape, 42, was charged federally with conspiracy to kidnap a federal official and assault a direct family member of a U.S. official with the intent to retaliate against the official. He begged not guilty.
