First start since finishing third in the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan Racecourse, Pandagate won a narrow victory in the $159,000 New York Derby on July 15 at Finger Lakes.
Clinging to the lead from the start, Dylan Davis kept the son of Arrogate within striking distance from the start. Holding firm until the final turn, Davis moved four lengths clear and made the race a three-horse race with a furlong remaining.
Skyler’s Spaceship who had led just before the opening mile, was struggling to stay in the chase as he was challenged by Pandagate and the 4-5 favourite Dr. Sullivan . Pandagate ($4.70) won by three-quarters of a length from Doc Sullivan in 1:45.63 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track. Skyler’s Starship was third.
Christophe Clement trainee improves to 2-0-1 in three starts this year with over $250,000 in earnings. Owned by Adelphi Racing Club, Madaket Stables, Corms Racing Stable and On The Rise Again Stable, Riggling has a 3-0-2 record in five career starts with $297,050 in earnings.
