Thorpedo Anna’s ownership group has partnered with Fasig-Tipton to produce hundreds of pink baseball caps to give away to racegoers attending the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.
When it was announced that his star mare would be facing off against stallions in the Mid-Summer Derby, trainer Kenny McPeek urged supporters of the three-time G1 winner to wear pink. Featuring Thorpedo Anna’s official logo, most of the hats will be handed out at Gate B as fans arrive. However, there will also be a chance to get your hands on limited edition hats throughout the race, with fans encouraged to follow the three-year-old’s X (formerly Twitter) account @Thorpedo_Anna for details on when and where they can get one during the day.
Purchased for $40,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Fall Auction, the mare nicknamed “The Grizzly” has taken her owners Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, Magdalena Racing and breeder Judy Hicks on quite the journey this season, winning three consecutive G1s.
“She has attracted quite a following,” said Jamie Watson of Brookdale Racing. “We have received a lot of messages asking if fans can buy Thorpedo Anna merchandise, so when Kenny asked her supporters to wear pink, the ownership group came up with the idea. We want to thank Fasig-Tipton for sponsoring this giveaway, as well as NYRA for helping us put it together. We look forward to seeing a wave of pink at Saratoga on Saturday.”
After wins in the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks, Thorpedo Anna will attempt to become the first mare to win at the Travers since 1915.
