Ortiz looking to make up for lost time after quitting
WBO number one contender Vergil Ortiz Jr is looking to make up for lost time out of the game since he Impressive victory over Egidijus Kavaliauskas last year.
By the time he faced Michael McKinson on August 6 in Texas, it had been nearly a year since the undefeated weightlifter recorded his 18th career win.
Ortiz at a recent virtual media roundtable said:
“We’re ready to go.”
“I really want to get back in the ring. By the time I fight this August, it’s been almost a whole year. I’d love to fight at least twice this year and even busier next year. ”
Ortiz v McKinson was scheduled to return in March, but illness forced the 24-year-old to be hospitalized postponing the game. The reigning British heavyweight champion may not have had the chance he wanted at the time but a win over late substitute Alex Martin ensured the trip to Los Angeles wasn’t a waste of time.
“I’m very disappointed that I didn’t get to fight [on March 19] especially since we found out that I wasn’t able to continue, literally, the week of the fight,” Ortiz recalls.
“It’s not that I want to waste a whole training camp and a few months before that; It’s not me. I saw Michael McKinson fight that night. I didn’t think too much about it. First of all, he was fighting someone whose style was completely different from mine. But we know how he fights, so we have a little more ice to start with.
“Michael McKinson is ranked (fifth) by the WBO, he is undefeated, it would be good on my resume if I beat him. He is a good fighter. ”
